How tall tires before rubbing?

Hi Caravell 5.1 Im going to get some new AT tiers I know the easy way is to keep it 215 65r16 but I do a lot of gravel roads and would like to go a little bigger on the sidewall for comfort. The front Ill keep stock size due to gearing. But in the back I think I could go a little bigger. unless it starts to rub when bottoming out? I think I remember once when driving really backloaded. the tires rubbed on bigger bumps? Am I mistaken? Was it just the springs making the noise, or could it actually be an issue going any bigger?

Depends on tyre width as well, the height (profile) of the tyre is a percentage of the width. As to the answer to your question, hard to say 😁

And I think going bigger on the back only might be a mistake. For reference I'm on 265/40/20 all round, 8.5J front 10J back staggered, 60mm lowered. Occasional rub on the fronts on full lock and a camber. Loads of tyres threads on here.

Oh, and I hear @CRS Performance are rather good at this stuff.

You sit much closer to the front wheels than the rear wheels so I doubt just changing the rear is going to improve comfort much, it will, however, make it more difficult if you get a puncture and the spare wheel you are carrying is the wrong size.
I'd always keep the tyres the same all around.

There are some good ‘rules’ (read above) on this page and it has a summary of tyre widths vs rim widths…

Interesting for @StratosFearXX they suggest an 8.5j rim has a max tyre width of 255?

Also worth remembering- if your tyres are all the same width but your rims are different there is potential for the overall tyre diameter on each axle to differ - as the tyre is spread the sidewall height effectively reduces. Some of this may be tweaked by varying pressure I guess.

Yes absolutely, and thank you. All those things!

Mine's a 4Motion manual and seem to work so far .

Ok so I’m keeping the original 16” rim, I think the 205 75 is the one I’ll go for I did a lot of searching online and calculations with will they fit website. That’s about 10% taller sidewall. And general grabbers at3 have a load rated tire
