Pick your collective brains on spare tyres 18"

hi all,

So I need some collective wisdom pls.
I'm currently running 4x 18" 255/45R18 wheels on the van. My spare is a 17" 215/70R17, which is probably the original. The van is a T32 2020 T6.1. This means the spare has a difference in diameter then the fitted wheels of nearly 2 inches (spare is bigger).

So I'm just about to change the tyres, so ai thought I would keep one of the ones being changed, stick it on a cheap 18" wheel and swap the 17" out. But here's the rub. I have a Rib bed installed, and I don't think I can or a deeper the in the spare wheel hole, since it will be too deep(the securing bracket is already maxxed out on the securing screws).

Any ideas? I don't really want to go down the squirty foam route, prefer a spare wheel. Was thinking that a 5x120 space saver might work (maybe from a bigger car?) just for emergency use, understanding the limitations. Anyone using one? Alternatively a 16" will also fit depth wise although a 1/2" smaller diameter.

According to willtheyfit a 215/65 r16 would be 4mm difference in diameter.

That’s a standard size - my t28 has this size and it’s on the door pillar sticker.
You can probably pick up a almost new one of eBay for a hundred quid - wheel and tyre.

it should be about 13mm difference, better than what I currently have (about 48mm difference) but not sure how much that will matter?

While 205/65 is a standard 215/65 is also on the door pillar sticker and is a close match - hence me suggesting that one.

Had to put my 16 inch spare on my T5, can't remember the actual (standard spare) size ... main wheels were 235/55/19 couldn't even tell the spare was on there, drove absolutely fine though I didn't go far.

As long as it's 2wd it should be fine.

If you carry a spare in another place, with a carrier on the rear door, then you can carry a spar of the same tyre and size as fitted on the 4 corners. Use the spare wheel well space for carrying something else.

ah ok, thanks - that doesn't appear on my pillar! You're right, that would be an ideal fit

If you have the T32 then you probably need a 17" wheel at a minimum, if the T6.1 is the same as the T6 like mine, due to the additional size of the brake caliper.

My 2019 199bhp T6 Caravelle exec has the larger brakes and can only accept 17" and over rims because it has larger brakes and 17" only shows a small gap between brake and rim. Not sure about T32 not all of those had larger brakes I believe

thanks all for the input. I've figured out now what the issue is from the above posts. Looks like my 17" has a 215/70R17 tyre, looking at the pillar label that @Lubrown posted it seems that this should in fact be a 215/60R17. This will make the tyre diameter within 5mm of the 18" wheels on each corner of the van and reduce the spare wheel diameter size by about 44mm.
