Help, broken down

Just stopped at traffic lights and then when trying to set off the gearbox won’t engage - when lifting the clutch there’s a grating sound. Waiting for the RAC now and then will be off to local garage. I’ve spoken to the garage and they have said to bring it over but don’t know when they’ll get chance to look at it. I’m assuming this is a clutch issue so would it be best to take to a clutch specialist? Or could it be a gearbox issue?

I would wait for the RAC to answer that, they will have the best information given that they will be there.

Gearbox won't engage ,,,, as I'm you can't select ANY gears ?
Or
Gearbox won't engage ,,,, as in you are in first gear , but there is no drive forward ?

It won’t engage any gear - just makes a grinding noise when lifting the clutch. Does sound a bit driveshaft related rather than clutch now I’ve had time to think about it.
Splines in the gearbox are known for rounding off. I would check there first
Is that an expensive job?

If you can lift your foot up completely and the gear stick is in a selected gear then the chances are it is the drive shaft. Usually it is the stub shaft that wears but you would need to pull the drive shaft to check. I am not sure on cost.
It is a common problem so a search should give you more details.

Stub shaft looks like the attached, the splines in the gearbox need checking too

Drive shaft most likely..... Fairly common.

What's the age. Millage, spec of the van?

It’s a 2017 T32 Highline - 2.0 manual. Mileage 155k. AA have just dropped it off at the garage and gonna be end of next week before they can look at it. AA Couldnt properly diagnose - all gears engage and he said clutch feels fine so says it’s likely a gearbox related issue. The waiting game now…. Would splines just suddenly go or would there be any warning signs? It was going absolutely fine until I stopped at traffic lights and then game over

Is it 5 or 6 speed? Mapped or standard. I had a friends who went with no warning. Would you be able to have a look yourself? It is the long shaft on drivers side you need to remove

It’s 6 speed and I don’t think it’s been mapped - certainly isn’t a fast wagon. It would likely be beyond my mechanical skill set and also would struggle for time and space to work on it sadly.

Jack up the front end and put the gearbox into 1st gear with the engine stopped.
Using a breaker bar / socket on a wheel bolt try turning each of the drive shafts without over torquing the wheel bolt. You shouldn’t be able to turn the wheels in gear.

It’s at the garage waiting to be seen so can’t get to it. Gonna be end of next week at the earliest before they look at it sadly
