[Guide] Fitting a steering wheel

Hello mate. I have a manual so I’m unsure, but am fairly certain I’ve read a post from @Tourershine where he swapped his MFSW with his mum’s Golf MFSW+Paddles and it worked.

I see you’ve posted on the Guide thread - someone with more knowledge will advise, I’m sure.

Done mine, took me about 35 minutes in total. Hardest bit was getting the buttons and surround off old wheel without snapping.

Massive thanks to @Kev_ for these instructions and whoever posted the MK7 Golf video - it made the job really straightforward. As others have said the hardest part was getting the trim and buttons off - took about 45 mins of very gentle prying to make sure I didn't break anything. A really effective and affordable way to upgrade your wheel.

ich besitze einen T6 Generation Six (Baujahr 2019, Motor CXEC 199 PS, DSG) und habe versucht, das Lenkrad gegen eines aus einem Touran zu tauschen. Die Tastenfelder sehen optisch identisch aus und verfügen über dieselben Funktionen inklusive ACC, jedoch hat das neue Lenkrad zusätzlich Schaltwippen (Paddles).


Aktueller Stand:

• Codierung: Die Schaltwippen habe ich per VCDS aktiviert, sie funktionieren einwandfrei.
• Funktionen: Menüsteuerung und Lautstärkeregelung am Radio laufen perfekt.
• Probleme: Das ACC, die Hupe und das Start-Stopp-System werfen Fehlermeldungen aus.

Ich habe bereits versucht, den internen Leitungssatz (Verbindung Airbag zu den Tasten) zu tauschen. Obwohl die Tasten von oben gleich aussehen, unterscheiden sie sich auf der Rückseite in Form und Aufnahme, sodass der Kabelsatz nicht passt.


Meine Frage: Hatte jemand schon mal dieses Problem? Wisst ihr, ob man die Verkabelung mit etwas Bastelarbeit ("Brico") anpassen kann oder ob es eine spezifische Pinbelegung (Pinout) gibt, die ich prüfen sollte?

If so, it won't work. The T6 uses different technology than the newer T6.1. So, theoretically, you need a steering wheel from a Touran that's roughly the same year as your T6. I could be wrong, but I've replaced several steering wheels, and they all worked because I used steering wheels from the same year.

Edit: As you can see in your pictures, the airbag is from a newer Touran. As I mentioned above, I doubt it will fit. You need a steering wheel from a Touran of the same year. Your airbag looks like the diamond-shaped model of the newer version, just like in the T6.1.

Hello everyone,


I own a T6 Generation Six (year 2019, CXEC 199 HP engine, DSG) and I have tried to swap the steering wheel for one from a Touran. The button clusters look identical and have the same functions, including ACC, but the new steering wheel also has additional paddle shifters.


Current status:

• Coding: I have activated the paddle shifters via VCDS, and they work perfectly.
• Functions: Menu navigation and volume control on the radio work flawlessly.
• Problems: The ACC, the horn, and the Start-Stop system are throwing error messages.

I have already tried to swap the internal wiring harness (connection from the airbag to the buttons). Although the buttons look the same from the top, they differ on the back in shape and mounting, so the wiring harness does not fit.


My question: Has anyone encountered this problem before? Do you know if the wiring can be adapted with some DIY ("brico") work, or if there is a specific pinout I should check?

Thanks for the help. You're right, I bought the steering wheel online and trusted the AI too much. It's a shame because I got it for a good price and the wheel is practically new. I tried swapping the wiring harness, but it's incompatible, so I gave up and put the original one back in. I'll have to buy a compatible one.
