Just Driving along today and after 2-3 miles the engine decided to just cut out all of a sudden. Popped the bonnet and could smell a funny buring smell, sort of like burning circuit board.
No signs of anything hot or anything melting.
Called out Mechanic and first thing he did was remove the timing belt cover. Belt looks good (was only replaced 20k ago) that seems to be where the smell was coming from.
Inside the cover where what seemed like bits of melted plastic.
I've just managed to get a look underneath and there looks to be loads of oil on and around the sump all around that area.

Waiting for a friend to take a look.

Any ideas

Chris

not sure about the rest yet . .

++

but that oil maybe from the front main crankshaft seal?

does it turn over?

what did the first mechanic say - when he had the cover off?

AUX belt ok?

tensioner stuck?

Ok, It turns over but nevers fires

The engine management light is on, but has been for a few weeks for a glow plug 2 fault. Getting it read tomorrow

Cant get a vid at the min as the battery is nearly flat

Mechanic wasnt too sure, said it sounded like it had compession but also said the belt could have slipped a tooth or 2

AUX belt and tensioner were replaced 4 months ago.

hmm. . . turns but dont fire.

defo going to need a battery charger on it.

then a good code scan to see what logged in the Engine.

we thinking:
belt slipped - timing?
failed HPFP? - low fuel rail pressure.?
glow plug2 - whats that fault for ?

and seperatly have a better look at that oil leak - possible CSMS leaking (common prob)

Not sure yet, trying not to think about it too much.

will find out more tomorrow once a scans been done.

leak is now on the list.

Had it looked at today. The Water pump had seized causing the back of the belt to melt and turn to hard plastic, this then got caught up in the bottom pulley and it slipped and was 3/4 of a turn out of timing
Put a new cambelt kit on it in the hope it might be ok.
But sounds like there is no compression.

Basically it’s engine rebuild time.

Belt and pump was only replaced 18 months ago by the previous owner.

Was it a genuine VAG pump?

Did the last owner ffit genuine parts?

Was it vat garage?

Any come back from them?

Worth the call?

Or you just going to sort out our yourself?..... With genuine parts this time.

I very much doubt it. They are just a small garage in Leicestershire and im in Milton keynes.

Cant see them wanting to know but it might be worth a phone call.

Im looking at £4500-£5000 for a rebuild from Turnkey Engineering near Heathrow. but im also looking at other options, problem is its my work van and need it back on the road asap.
