Crank seal replacement

I've got a T6.1 that's done 50k miles and is on an extended all in one warranty. I've had the van a year and taken it to the dealership for an oil service. They have advised me the crank seal needs replacing but won't be covered by the warranty. Is this a common issue on these vans? It's an expensive fix, has anyone had it replaced under the extended warranty?

Fairly expensive, you didn’t mention which end.
Oil leaks are not covered in the warranty along with some other common problems. Have a read of the small print.
You could try for some goodwill as there’s nothing to lose.

It's won't be cheap, but won't be tragic either. Price can vary widely depending on where you go so little point me telling you how much my local spanner jockey charges.

You'd be daft not to have new belts as well. They have to come off anyway, so may as well. Water pump too. Quality pattern pumps are fine - VW ones are nothing to write home about quality wise so no harm saving money there provided its an equally mediocre substitute and not completely cheap tat.
 
Front main seal is about a £1k job from VW.

It's covered on the main 1st 3yr warranty.

And covered on the factory 4/5th year warranty.

But it's not covered under the ALL-IN waranty. (All oil leaks are exempt)

What year is your T6.1? .... What engine code?.

If it's out of warranty, then a local Indy would be cheaper?

It's a 69 plate 2020 110bhp T30 Highline
 
6.1 production started in 2019, so could be a 6.1 or a 6 registered from existing stock.
 
Have you had many quotes to do the job?
 
The crank case oil seal, according to the dealership, has apparently been slightly re-designed by VW multiple times and there are a number of part numbers since the original iteration. They are well aware of the failure rate and usually have the parts in stock. If you are prepared to have a bit of a fight with VW Customer Care you may stand a chance of some "good will" especially if you have full VW SH. My experience of good will is that they are going to do it at a lower rate, still with profit and not quite at cost, probably nearer a normal trade rate.

as other have said worth doing belts and water pump at the same time (consequential works). My T6 2019 failed at a similar mileage. I think I got 40% good will but they gave me this off the whole job inc belts etc so when I priced up with a local indy it was roughly the same. Interestingly the indy did suggest that the seals they fit are OEM but have a sticker placed over the VW logo on the box. A decent Indy will likely fit quality parts, no brainer not to

If you can get goodwill contribution then maybe worth getting it sorted at dealership and you get two years warranty as falls outside the all in warranty cover. I found out recently that any warranty replacements are only covered for the length of the said warranty

I seem to recall I paid just shy of £900 but that was two years ago

It's a CXHC engine code. Does this mean it's Delphi ECU?

The seal housing is plastic with all the stability of a Blue Peter project.
My 2016 CFCA seal housing is aluminium, obviously that was too expensive to produce?!

iI have just paid £1000 to have mine done on my 2017 T32 by an excellent independent garage in Newcastle. It had the cambelt and waterpump replaced at the same time.
 
Main crank seal is expensive because timing belt, waterpump must also be replaced, cannot cut corners there....

Hi DXX,
I've just had my 35k '20 plate 6.1 back from service MOT, with an advisory on the crank seal. Is this something that should be carried out immediately? Can it be monitored by keeping an close eye on the oil level, it hasn't used any?? I was intending to replace the cam belt/water pump at 50k, pretty annoying that something like this should go so early on. Thanks as always to you and all the other knowledgeable folk on this forum.
