Covering existing hard board panels

I have ordered usual suspects of Silent Coat, insulation and foil bubble wrap to do the load area of the Kombi. I have also ordered foam backed Suede Trim to trim the panels and roof lining. I am not going the full carpet lining route, only the panels fitted back on with flush 'Christmas tree' clips in place of the originals.
Are there any particular reasons why I can't just cover the original hard board panels instead of buying the 3.6mm ply that is often used?

I covered my existing interior factory panels. All covered fine and reassembled with no issues including speakers in the rear roof. All depends what end result you are trying to achieve but the simple answer is yes

I didn't think there would be an issue, but most of the threads I've read on the subject, the person has bought new ply panels to cover. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't any particular reason for this.
