I quite confident when reversing . I don't need the van to slam on the brakes.

Can this be disabled in any way .

Wasn't aware that they had a radar sensor on the rear.

It gives me a fright every time .
You can disable it. However I have had a few occasions where it saved some damage to the van.
Might be I am overly confident… even with the rear camera on…

If you reverse at some speed . And the either sensor or camera ick something up it jams the brakes on . It really is over the top . And scares the hell out of you

I agree that the reversing sensor is very aggressive and it has scared me a couple of times. Not sure how disable the function or which part of the system it is. It seems to work at quite a range when a pedestrian is walking maybe 3m behind the van. Love to hear more about this.

Phone call to insurance "Hello I accidentally reversed into a bollard. I need to make a claim."

Insurance "Oh, but your van has auto brake to prevent this."

"I disabled it"

It wouldn't stop that if you was going at a slow speed .

They do if they have the side alert - there is a radar in each quarter just below the rear light cluster. The radar does the long range traffic sensing and then the ultrasonics on the rear/side track the vehicle when it's near and alongside.

If fitted you also have the option of the crossing traffic alert where the radars are active on reversing, the aim being to spot a car you can't yet see as you reverse out of a parking space.

I've had mine save me twice now from a crunch.

So AFAIK there are two systems that will brake when reversing - one based on the ultrasonic parking sensors that will try and brake before you hit something at close range and one based on the rear radar (if fitted) that tries to spot moving radar targets on a potential collision course. Both can be turned off on mine.

You can tell which one is triggering if you look at the display - the ultrasonic sensors are the bands you see all the time but the radar sensors are the two wide lobes to the rear that light up red

Although it made me jump the first time it happened I would rather that than hit something/somebody and I don’t reverse fast enough to get whiplash!!

Possibly if by "reverse at speed" you mean a speed like you'd normally drive forwards around a car park then the radar might be seeing car like movement towards you from static objects.

The times it has activated for me it's never actually braked, it's just alarmed and I've braked before it intervened.

I have reversed into something once in 40 years or driving and that was during an argument with a GF, c1986. I think I am okay to reverse my car/van unaided.

Mine is fitted with this option. I have no intention of switching it off. The lane assist with lights in the mirrors seems to be part of that system?
