Anyone encountered unusual issues when upgrading from 140a to 180a alternator?

As part of my T6 front end swap, I am planning some needed maintenance, preventative maintenance and upgrades whilst I have the front end apart.

One of them is to swap out my 140a alternator for a 180a one (my pulley is near death anyway so may as well spend the extra) and checking ETKA, there doesn't seem to be any wiring differences etc but wanted to see if anyone else has done this and if they encountered anything unusual/unexpected?

When something seems simple and straightforward, I am super suspicious ha ha!

Not done it myself.

But,,,,

I think there is an entry in the ECM/BCM that denotes the alternator size fitted.?

It may even be in the battery monitor module.?

So that the 100% power demand reflects what the alternator can do.

I have the 180A unit, but from factory as I had the second battery setup etc

Will have to have a rummage in VCDS to find it.

Thanks for the reply dude :)

I don't have S/S so no Battery Monitor but I do recall seeing the alternator spec somewhere in the modules as you say.

I could be mixing up my van with one of the hundreds of others I've scanned though ha!

Gotcha.

So the T6 smart alternator has LIN bus for coms to set the output voltage/current.

I'm wondering about the T5.1 140A setup, and if it's just field control wire from the ECM to set output current?

Would have to look at the T5.1 diagrams to see what that alternator hooks up to..... It probably won't be LiN bus?

Basic connections between the alternator, ECU and BCM. Nothing listed in the CAN/LIN diagrams for my PR code (7L3) so no LIN connection there. Thank god as that would just make my life harder as I'm sure I'd find more things to modify LOL
