Ad blue warning - can anyone give any pointers on the analysed data?

So an update here:

Van back from MOT and all passed fine. Just an advisory about the minor oil leak from the crankshaft (I'll get this sorted soon). I confirmed the part number of my Adblue tank and pump with the one on eBay and it matches exactly. I ended up buying it for £200 which seems about right when compared with other adverts.

Hopefully a new tank and pump should sort out the frustrating error.

Picking up this thread as searching for help…

On holiday near Bordeaux. Left Paris on Saturday, about an hour into the journey 650 miles till no start pinged up having topped up before leaving the uk. Now on 400 miles. Been to a couple of local garages with a French speaking friend and it doesn’t look positive.

Any advice on how to patch up an 18 plate T6 to get us home on Monday? If I can bumble thru to Calais and get recovered back in Blighty then all good.

So from what I have read on here in other posts, if it hits zero on the dash it will not let the van start up again until it's fixed. Do not switch off the engine if it gets to zero. It might go into limp mode -(that's a guess). So best advice is to ensure somehow that you don't stop the van running when you are close to say, 50 miles remaining. It seems to count down in units of 50 miles.

The adblue system design in these vans is f***ing crap. VW made it way too unreliable. It should just be a simple case of topping up and job done. In my case the adblue bottle symbol appeared out of the blue even though I must have had at least 10L in the tank when I got home after a long journey.

I will be sure to update everyone on here if I can fix my system when the new tank and pump arrives in a few days.

If it does get fixed then I will be very pleased because it's quite a faff for me to play Tetris moving car and van around on my driveway. Then add in getting under the van with proper axle stands and 3 tonne trolley jack.

One top tip if you do decide to replace your tank and pump yourself - buy some of those EVA foam mats that interlock together. It works as a nice surface to lay down on whilst under the van. Once you are under the van and have room from it being lifted it's not actually that tricky to work on the tank. However - one annoying task is is removing the plastic under tray pieces. Buy some more steel retaining pieces from eBay or similar as they will get damaged when you take the undertray panels off. Take your time and be careful not to break things.

EGR replacement due soon too - I have heard how tricky this is in terms of accessing some of the bolts, so not exactly looking forward to it.

This is correct. We are with friends so I’m thinking of being towed half way leaving a few miles of range then once out of the tunnel getting recovered or limp mode home to Northampton. Not the stress I need on holiday!!

As my Adblue warning symbol appeared and the tanks wasn't anywhere near empty, all things do seem to point to a pump/tank fault. No amount of draining and careful refilling or using the ignition key procedure helped to clear the fault. It's staying there all the time. I hope it F**KS off soon!

Absolutely. Just my luck too that Ill be going away soon in a couple of weeks and earliest time for garage to look at it is September so it's a case of me just getting on with it coz I do NOT want to be stuck miles away from home because of a stupid bloody Adblue pump. Good luck with your mission too. Hope it goes well for you. Just remember to keep a close watch on the Adblue range indicator.

The only thing I can think maybe and option from what I gather is to map out the adblue but my hopes of finding someone to do that in the arse end of France are slim

Aha. Right - that's what it is. Thanks for this. The new tank comes with one of those so I'll fit the new control unit with the new tank just so everything is as supplied. Looks like from the ebay advert that they have pretty much kept all the electrical connections in place - so hopefully it should not be a massively tricky task. I am hoping this all ends happily in a few days. In some ways I am looking forward to doing it since I know exactly what to do now.

It might be possible but I reckon too much of a gamble. With all things considered including the extra stress being on holiday - probably best to go with getting the van back in UK and go from there. I wouldn't try to get it sorted in France coz its yet another thing to think about which I doubt you need right now.

You haven't tried the 'fill up with fuel and drive it' solution yet then??
Not just yet. Reason for me going ahead and getting a new system (well, a used one from a breakers) is that the original fault just appeared even when there was plenty of Adblue in the tank. It didn't happen after a top up, running low or anything like that. I didn't want to wait on this, and at least by replacing the tank and pump along with the Adblue control unit, I can at least be confident that the fault should disappear for a long time. If I can get it working properly, Ill take the pump out of the old tank and see what it looks like inside. Hopefully it should all work properly soon. The fault itself could be in the pump or Adblue control unit or both. So best to replace both to be sure. The annoying thing is that there's no fault code appearing in the ECU to say something like "Adblue control unit intermittent signal". It might actually be a combination of the pump on its last legs and the control unit getting confused. Essentially there's a big mismatch with the information the ECU is reading from the control unit on the tank compared to what the dashboard says. Almost like an implausible signal issue.

That’s a fair point. My warning light came on whilst doing a fairly long run as well, and there was plenty Ad Blue in the tank as well. @Pegsoid342 had the issue also on a long journey so there seems to be somewhat of a connection here…..

My situation is this…filled up
Ad-blue before leaving home - read 4500 miles remaining. Had the 650 mile warning ping up with maybe 1/3 of a tank of fuel left about 450 miles into our journey. Stopped soon after to fill up on fuel and now ad-blue. Ad-blue warning did not change, still reading circa 550 miles despite full tank of ad-blue. Spoke to a couple of local garages who tried to help but said it is main dealer issue - both main dealers in Bordeaux don’t answer the phone. We have stops in Le Mans and Le Touquet planned for the journey home. I could possibly get to Le Touquet with the last 100km in Limp mode. Would do anything it takes to limp across the boarder into the uk then get recovered home.

I don't suppose you have VCDS?

I believe there are ways to reset it with VCDS (although I have never tried it myself):

eg
and other youtube clips

Tried to reset my system with VCDS and my cable (proper one unlimited VINs) and it didn't work. Probably because the fault with mine is almost certainly to do with the control unit and/or the pump
