It sounds like you may be onto something, especially if it is occurring in cold weather.
The Adblue tank does have a heater as far as I know, but if the heater fails it should ping a fault code P20B9. There is a measuring block for the Adblue temperature using VCDS I think.
It also sounds like a lot are getting the issue while down in warmer places (Spain, France etc)
