2023 French road trip.

So after a delayed crossing thanks to Le shuttles hopeless service we finally arrived for our first couple of nights of our French tour at château Gandspette campsite site, very nice for a stop near Calais. Visited the nearby V1and V2 rocket base, amazing construction which will surely have been on abandoned engineering.

Then moved on to a site near Sedan where we had a tour of the castle. Stayed at camping du banel where you had your own private shower/toilet block at the rear of your pitch and a great onsite restaurant run by a Dutch couple. Then onto the champagne region staying at an old municipal campsite in Chaplin-en-Champagne. Good site for our visit to the Sanger champagne house (Idris Elba imports their champagne under his own label),

A quick one night stop at a campsite in Langres and now just outside Lyon for a couple of nights. Had the dreaded 650 miles till death adblue warning light come on whilst driving here, quick stop for fuel, read of faults on Carista (nox sensor nonsense), gave the van a good talking to and the light reset itself a few miles later. Good job I’d read about this on here and it’s tendency to reset itself or I would have gone into full John Cleese mode.

All sites found using the ACSI app and every site has plenty of room.

Awesome. Sounds like your having a great adventure!

So a drive into Lyon today, look round the old quarter, Basilica and Roman ruins only marred by the adblue light coming on again showing 600 miles til no restart  Plan is to carry on to our next campsite which is on the way to Bordeaux and hope the adblue thing resets itself as I know I have 5000 miles worth of adblue in the tank. We are planning on getting a ferry back from Bilbao which is about 500 miles away so should be an interesting couple of weeks if it doesn’t reset !!

Two nights at a great campsite (le Moulin du Blueufond) walking distance to the village of Montignac Lascaux and the cave paintings of Lascaux (worth a tour). Also only 30 minutes drive to Sarlat which we visited to day on market day (park out of town and walk in).

We left Lyon to do the 250 mile drive to Montignac will 600 miles to adblue no start showing on the clock, 50 miles in and it reset to 5000 miles; not really the way to tour France but heyho, off to Saint Emillion tomorrow

So a quick one night at a campsite in Rauzan near Saint Emilion (Camping du Vieux Chateau). Again a very nice campsite run by a hard working couple who keep it spotless. Interestingly I was getting quoted 30 euros to book it on line via the ACSI app with booking fee whereas it was 17 euros for the night at the campsite. Drove into Saint Emilion in the afternoon, very touristy but interesting town

Now at a large commercial site at Biscarosse (still through ASCI) for few days by the beach chilling before heading to Capbreton. No recurrence of the adblue light so feeling less stressed about breaking down.

Now in a rainy Biarritz although arrived a couple of days ago when the sun was still shining. Had a one night stop over in Capbreton, very nice town and one for the surfers. Campsite was right on the beach, 17 euros a night whereas those paying to use the airie outside the campsite were paying 13 euros so not much saving there.

Staying at Campsite Biarritz until Saturday then in to Spain for last stop before ferry home.

Some epic looking waves there! Are dogs allowed on the beach?

Can’t remember seeing any - that beach is in town - but took a walk along the beach next to the campsite and there were plenty of people walking dogs on leads and I think it’s a better beach. This is the only campsite on this trip that has been full

At the last campsite on our 3 week trip; staying at camping orio in Orio, Spain for the weekend. It’s just along the coast from San Sebastián (you can get a train there from Orio for a day trip) and is a short walk from the beach or into town. Haven’t managed to eat in town as none of the restaurants start serving food til after nine but a great atmosphere on Saturday evening with all the bars full. The beach also has a couple of lively bars/restaurants and it’s clearly a Spanish/Basque town rather than a tourist town. Campsite is very good and busy, pitches are quite close together with lots of Spanish families staying for the weekend, Dutch and Germans. Having stayed in San Sebastien before this is a much better option. There is a river that runs down to the sea and is protected by a harbour wall, perfect for those who like paddle boarding.
