WTF is going on with this Android Auto issue?

Hi all.

I've read pretty much everything I can find online about these issues with zero luck really so far.

Bought a 23 plate T6.1 in January, not a single connection issue until last week. Phone wouldn't connect to AA. Next day it was fine, happened again, reset the head unti and it connected immediatley. Few days later back to not connecting, a quick reset got it sorted a few times, back to no connection now, sometimes getting an onscreen error of USB device not responding, sometimes a message on the phone "usb device not supported"

Van connected to my mates phone immediatley.

So far i've tried many confirmed working cables, uninstalled AA, updated phone, cleared USB cache partition, cleared AA cache, cleared USBsettings cache via developer mode, cleaned phone usb port with contact cleaner. Previously I've been using any old cheapo cable and its worked fine. I have even resorted to trying my high speed data cable used for backups. AA software version on the van is S1.3_A0970.

What IS STRANGE is I understand only 1 of the USB-c ports are data for AA correct? We'll the phone has previously connected successfully via the second "charge only" port in the past.

After doing my long list of updates I've just tried again, eventually got through the new connection process, phone connected and working, great, fixed. Unplugged and tried again only to have the same annoying screen as the last few days.

I cannot for the life in me think what could be the issue considering my mates phone connected straight away last night.

Any thoughts before I just buy a wireless AA headunit? Absolutley doing my tits in.

Thanks in advance to all those who had the patience to read that essay of misery.

My guess is pocket fluff in the USB socket on the phone.

Contract cleaner won't get it. Get a pin and scrape around the bottom of the port making sure to get all the way around the USB 'chip' . It gets compacted from all the times it's plugged in so is tricky to spot.

I'm very convinced this is software related the more I read. Many people with issues with their phones only charging with the wire in a certain way, thats software not physical as my Playstation VR also has this issue out of the box pre software update.

When I first had the issue I left my phone connected, reset the stereo and it connected immediatley without me doing anything with the phone, I didn't reconnect it so no changes with the USB connection.

The android phones it works with are also on the slightly older version.

Just to elaborate on some points that people may find useful in the future.

To "clear USB partition" you have to boot the phone up in restore mode. To do this on my S24+ you press volume up and power on together, as soon as you see the samsung logo release power button but keep the volume up button held (sometimes its tricky to time and the phone will just start normally, turn off and try again) You'll have a menu, use the volume keys to select "clear USB partition cache" - use the power button to select this option (you must have a USB plugged in at the time for this to work)

To clear USB settings cache go to the apps list under settings, click the sort options downwards arrow and select "show system apps" and click ok. Once this has been selected scroll down to USB settings, under the storage section there is an option to clear the cashe. Don't fiddle with other options as this can bugger stuff up.

To check that your USB connection is set to data transfer you must put the phone into developer mode. Go to settings, about this phone and click the build number roughly 7 times, you will see a little message saying your X clicks away from being a developer, carry on untill it unlocks developer options. You will now have dev options at the bottom of your settings. DO NOT fiddle with things as you can quite easily mess / brick your phone. Around 2/3 the way down (there are pages and pages of options here) you'll see "default USB connection (or similar, I'm typing from memory here) within that menue you can select "file transfer" / "charge only" etc etc. For AA you need file transfer

Today the phone wouldn't connect as usual, cleared USB cache, still didn't connect, tried the lower USB port that apparantly is charging only and taa daa AA connected and worked as expected.

Unsure what's actually going on but figured I'd cover all the ins and out as best I could in the hope it helps anyone in the future
