Wonderful...or Woeful?

How reliable has your T6/6.1 been?

  • Totally reliable. I cry tears of joy every time I think of how wonderful its been.

  • Fairly reliable. The odd fault above and beyond wear and tear, but nothing too bad.

  • OKish. The odd fault has left me stranded or made my bank manager's eyes water.

  • Pretty bad. It's less trustworthy than a North Korean condom.

  • Utterly woeful. I spend more time on the bus than driving my van these days.

Possibly they have low expectations. Personally if I had a clutch / flywheel renewal at less that 150k miles I’d be peeved.
Id be narked too...if I'd owned a van from new.

With used vans the previous owner may have taken a good bit of life out of them, so while I wouldnt be chuffed its at least understandable. Thats why used ones cost less I guess.

Using KY as an oil supplement?
Scientifically proven to be as good as anything else in the market.
As an old engineer once said to me, ‘ if it starts smoking just ease off a bit but don’t stop or it’ll seize up’

The silent majority are finally speaking out. The theory that those with problems make the most noise as they actually have something to talk about seems to be holding true, although that could change as more owners cast their vote.

Had to tip the balance to totally reliable to be prominent. Barring 2 alloys with white worm, a little bit of trim moving out of position above the drivers door and the sliding door lights flickering occasionally, I cant say anything different. But at nearly 20k miles should I be expecting anything but? Due to go into Liverpool for sat nav software update and these issues barring the alloys in October to be sorted.

I frequent other fora, one of which is a boat forum. It's exactly the same case there, if you took the posts at face value, you would think that every outboard engine out there is a grenade waiting to go off. You only ever hear about the ones that fail, and that isn't always due to the engine per se. Lack of maintenance, buggering about trying to squeeze every last ounce of power & speed, not following manufacturers instructions, because what do they know? are all factors. Very few actually fail due to design/manufacturing faults.

Yes, I frequent a couple of tech forums and most of the posts are problems with this OS or that piece of hardware. Not many ppl post to say how wonderful things are going.
The ones that do are quite boring.

How many of those have been bought from a bloke down the pub who only took cash.
A mate of mine used to work at an outboard workshop and was told not to ask customers too many questions.

Most of the stolen ones are in a container and out of the country in hours. Much the same as stolen cars.

T6 6 speed TSi – 19 plate
I purchased the van in Aug 22, fully converted, with low mileage, 19 or 22k on the clock, excellent I here you say! More on this later.

Had a year of no mechanical issues, but threw some money at it for looks and handling. I blame this forum ££££.
  • Side bars
  • Coil overs
  • H7’s
  • Awning rail
  • Puddle lights
Fast forward Sept 23, annual jaunt down to Cornwall, went to drive away for a day out, steering heavy, no fluid in the reservoir…….
  • New steering rack required - ££££
  • Whilst I was throwing money at it, I decided to swap out the 20’s for 19’s, more £££ for aesthetics, new tyres required too.

Fast forward Sept 24, 1 day after returning from our annual jaunt to Cornwall, the dreaded sticking clutch pedal.
  • Master cylinder changed £££, worked ok for a week, then the pedal of doom returned.
Back into the garage she went,
  • Slave cylinder
  • Clutch
  • Dual fly mass wheel
  • Major service
  • Another set of 19 wheels (replaced under warranty)
  • 4 more new tyres required for replacement wheels (my bad as they were over inflated and I didn’t check the wear pattern)
Many, many ££££’s spent

With a heavy heart and a very light wallet, I threw my toys out of the pram and put it up for sale.
Once I had calmed down, robbed the local post office and mugged a succession of old folk on their pension day, the coffers finally recovered and it is still with me.

Moral of the story!

Don’t get hung up on low mileage, even though it had covered a minimal amount, my mechanic said that once he had the clutch out and dfm, either the mileage was hooky, or, pre conversion, the previous owner had ragged the tits off of the thing.

Oh, and don’t go to Cornwall in September, seems to jinx the bloody thing.

Heading off to Welsh Wales next week, fingers crossed for a trouble free journey.

Got to wonder if the trend of steering rack failures is linked to bigger heavier wheels (more gyroscopic force) and mis-alignment due to suspension and wheel mod’s.
The more the steering links and rack are out of alignment the more friction and wear plus additional load on the PS pump.

But out of all that money spent, how much could you attribute to a failure of the vehicle? You’ve radically altered the makeup of the base vehicle with wheels and suspension changes, could this be a contributing factor to the steering rack failure and even the clutch?

After all the bad experience mentioned on forum id expect the figure to show the opposite of what they do, my ex rac has been quite good no breakdowns yet still a few wear and tear changes costing a couple of grand and a lot more in upgrades and still now where near finish, how about a thread on how much you have spent two headings HAD TO for the repairs and the other WANTED To for all the extras, I'm at about £2500 Had and £4000 Wanted in about 16 months and i have only done 7k mile in that time

Indeed. Its common for folk (not Cuffy, I might add) to complain their clutch only lasted 50,000 miles (or whatever) while completely ignoring the fact that the previous owner had been tearing arse out of it for however many miles.
