Where Have You Been In Your Van Today?

Cloud base far too low to attempt a worthwhile summit of Cadair Idris, so off to Barmouth on the Mawddach Trail. A very scenic just over 10 mile round trip. Had a mooch and a good brew, but as I wasn’t in the market for a new bucket n’ spade it didn’t overly impress.
That said, I would return to explore the Trail fully by bike…

We are at a bear sanctuary in the middle of nowhere in the mountains in Croatia.
Bumped into an English couple in Zadar last night that told us about it so this afternoon we drove 120miles into the mountains and here we are.
You can view the bears and you can stay in the van for free overnight.
Love an adventure.View attachment 303785View attachment 303786
And there’s a bar too.View attachment 303787
Please tell me you knew there was bar there before setting off on your wild bear chase? 🙏

Back in 2010, me and a mate drove a Toyota Landcruiser from SW France to Dubai (mate had to do it so decided to tag along for the ride!). I’d just retired (for the first time) so we turned it into a ‘lads outing’ and took about 5 weeks over it. Anyway,we were camped in the mountains of darkest Romania one night and heard wolves howling in the distance and a bit later (after the fire had burnt out) a bit of noise in the vicinity of the tents. I unzipped my tent door with a very powerful torch and was surprised to see a brown bear about 5 metres away but not as surprised as the bear who turned around and legged it (much to my relief!).

Buying a load (and I do mean a load - about 1/4 of a tonne!) of concrete blocks. It’s handy having a van and one with a good load capacity! Also handy having a good strong 22 year old son who unloaded most of them for me 👍

After a bright start, the move North onto the Llyn Peninsula was visually miserable. We went via Harlech and that was one of the only place names that didn’t make me feel I was on Countdown.
Now settled into a soulless, open, hilltop site just outside Abersoch called Tyn-y-Mur. To be fair, the views would be great, but the weather’s not selling it.

On the plus side, plenty of VW waves but sadly not one from Bear Grylls when checking his gaff out via Binos during a beach stroll…

We're still at Valamar Padova Camping on Rab in Croatia and although there seems to be loads of VWs around, there's only one Magirus Deutz as pictured below. It might not be a VW but it's still German and it's also very big and in a strange sort of way quite pretty as well. All that plus it's probably not far off my age meant I thought it deserved a picture.
