Webasto Airtop 2000STC very smokey when engine running, OK otherwise

As per titile.

This was fitted by camper converter 18months ago & seems fine when the engine is not running, but start the engine (as I've used it to help defrost the van over the last few days) & it starts making a wierd noise and smokes like an old steam train.

Turn the engine off & it clears up almost instantly.

The controller shows no error codes etc.
So I'm wondering if it's actually been installed properly? Or maybe they haven't fitted the correct kit for a van with AdBlue?

Anyway, any thoughts/advice would be welcomed from those experienced with them, before I tackle the converter about it.

 
Adblue is injected into the vehicle exhaust, that can never have any effect on a the auxiliary heater.
Smoke like that is obviously caused by incomplete combustion, either too much fuel or insufficient air. Don’t run it until you find the cause!
I assume that you have read through the manual and carried out the diagnostics, the manual will be on the manufacturers website if you don’t have a hard copy.
@oldiebut goodie is a heater expert.
 
My first thought would be that they have connected the fuel line into the engine fuel line which, as soon as the engine starts, pressurizes the line and overfuels the heater. Who installed it?

You may need a replacement pump for the heater if that is the case ( in case of very high pressure ) and the heater will need a service if it has been soaked in fuel.

It runs fine & clean when the engine is not running

It was originally installed by Autohaus

My thought was over fuelling but can’t see how it’s been plumbed ATM as don’t have lift access to get the under trays off easily

I realise how adblue is injected but there are different Webasto 2000STC kits for transporters with & without adblue
 
Like @oldiebut goodie points out it looks like it’s been connected to the feed line from the fuel tank lift pump not the tank return line.
 
I would not trust Autohaus 100%. I had them build my van but they did not know how to mount my Webasto correctly. All I had them do was fit the fuel line for me as they have the ramps making it easier, I then fitted the heater myself.

I haven't seen different transporter T6 kits for adblue or not.

You have a choice of buying a pair of ramps or driving down to them.

@oldiebut goodie TBH I’ve been unhappy with a lot Autohaus did to this van & have been gradually replacing/upgrading a lot they have done :rolleyes:

They converted it for Marshalls VW (Bridgewater) originally.

I definitely won’t be travelling to either of them as it’s over 300miles ea. way.

I am in the process of completing my new garage but yet to get leccy, shutter & a 2 post ramp in there

I have carefully perused them and the only difference that I can see is one has a fuel pick-up pipe included and the other hasn't!

Ok interesting to know. Every day is a school day as I have no direct hands-on experience of diesel heaters TBH :whistle:

I just noticed there were different ones listed for AdBlue on that webshop:thumbsup:
 
Can I add something to this thread ? I've converted a shuttle to a camper and fitted a diesel heater. Following the threads on here I have tee'd into the auxiliary heater supply to feed my heater. Everything has been fine until recently when I noticed a diesel stain where I park. Cutting a story short, it was the nasty green CDH pipe that had a very small leak. I've subsequently replaced all the pipe back up to the tee. To bleed the system I left the pipe off the heater pump and started the van - fuel came through after a couple of seconds indicating that it is a pressurised supply. Having searched and found this thread, I'm now concerned that picking up fuel from the auxiliary heater could cause problems if I ran the heater and engine together - I've not tried.
Any other shuttle owners done the same?
 
Mine was definitely T'd into a pressurised feed incorrectly.
Colin @ 8Ball campers Nr Hull sorted it out in about 10 mins for me
 
It dribbled through - not a powerful jet but certainly had some back pressure
 
Sounds like it is well under anything that would cause problems. You can have up to 2m of head that would give the same as you have seen.
 
What pressure does the pump in the tank produce? On my t5 I installed a new standpipe in the tank so the heater pump was on suction lift. On the shuttle if I've now got say 5psi positive pressure at the heater pump, is the 5psi difference in inlet pressure significant in terms of what the output pressure is from the heater pump?
If say it delivers 100psi, it's only a 5% variation, if it's 10 psi then it's 50% which is going to be a problem if I start the engine.
