Introduction

The VW Transporter T7 has been spied during high-altitude testing in the Austrian Alps this month, fully laden with a trailer on tow. The next-generation model T7 is due to be launched in 2023 although its not yet clear whether it will be based on VW’s MQB or a Ford platform as part of Project Cyclone.

What is Project Cyclone?

Project Cyclone is the joint venture between Ford and Volkswagen to develop their next generation of vans. The two manufacturers are the last in Europe not to share or sell badge-engineered versions with other manufacturers, but that will come to an end in 2022.

The first vehicle to be produced will be the pickup truck – the successor to the current Ford Ranger and VW Amarok – which will be engineered and built by Ford. Next will be the small city van – the next-generation VW Caddy and Ford Transit Connect – which will be designed and engineered by Volkswagen.
After this, it gets a bit complicated. The official statement from the company states that the ‘larger van’ will be developed by Ford but its unclear whether this refers to the VW Transporter/Ford Transit Custom or VW Crafter/Ford Transit.
However, there have been numerous reports that the VW Transporter T7 is based on VW’s own MQB platform, which is used on a wide range of vehicles from VW Polo to Skoda Superb. This suggests that VW and Ford may still be developing their medium vans – the Transit Custom and Transporter – separately.

VW Transporter T7 design

We can see that the nose protrudes further than the current model, suggesting a more passenger-focused design and better fuel economy. Unusually for a van, the rear lights are vertical which, again, hints at a more lifestyle-focused design. Apart from that, there is very little distinguishing the heavily designed T7 prototype.
The front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive format is likely to continue and the MQB has been developed to house large lithium-ion batteries, meaning the T7 could easily be adapted into an electric version.

When Is The VW T7 Coming Out

1677860915686.png

The New VW Transporter T7

We have all been waiting in anticipation for the new T7 to be released. So when is the new VW T7 actually coming out?

The VW Transporter T7 is available to order now on the official VW website however there are is currently a delay in delivery due to shortages in supply of vital components – a problem that has affected every vehicle manufacturer in 2022.

The first of the T7 models are expected to hit the roads in the UK early 2023.

What we know about the new VW T7

The VW T7 has been named “The Multivan” and is the replacement for the high specification, well known and loved VW Caravelle 6.1. Hopefully the T7 will be available in other trims such as Panel Van and Kombi at some point in the future.

The VW T7 is available with a few different engine options –

  • Petrol 1.5 TSI 136PS
  • Petrol 2.0 TSI 204PS
  • eHybrid 1.4TSI and 85kW Electric motor – Combined power 218PS
  • Diesel 2.0 TDI 150PS
The Petrol and eHybrid options are expected to be the most popular.

What are the different VW T7 models?

The VW T7 Multivan is available in two different specifications called the Multivan Life and the Multivan Style. The Life is the slightly lower specification option retailing from £43,700 in the UK and the Style starts at £55,510. The good news is that both the Life and Style can be bought in any of the engine options:

  • Petrol 1.5 TSI 136PS
  • Petrol 2.0 TSI 204PS
  • eHybrid 1.4TSI and 85kW Electric motor – Combined power 218PS
  • Diesel 2.0 TDI 150PS

What is the difference between the T7 Life and the T7 Style?

With a starting price of almost £12k higher you are probably wondering what benefits the VW T7 Style has over the T7 Life.
So here we go – here is a list of options that you will get on a Multivan Style and not on the Life (unless you pay the individual option upgrade fee):

  • “Dark Woodgrain Optic” decorative inserts
  • 17″ “Dundrod” alloys, black (the Life comes with 16″)
  • 235/55 R17 103 H XL Low rolling resistance tyres
  • Additional interior noise reduction
  • Advanced high-beam control
  • Ambient interior lighting
  • Central locking system “Keyless Entry” with fingerprint “two-stage unlocking”
  • Chrome trims on side and rear
  • Digital Cockpit Pro
  • Electric auxiliary heater
  • Electric sliding door – left (Life is not electric)
  • Electric sliding door – right (Life is not electric)
  • Gloss black grille with 2 illuminated chrome trim (The life is not iluminated and chrome)
  • Heated front seats
  • Heated windscreen
  • IQ.LIGHT LED Matrix
  • Navigation system “Discover Media”
  • Park Assist with front and rear parking sensors
  • Seat trim covers in ArtVelours
  • Sliding window in sliding door – left & Right
  • Stainless steel loading protection
  • Stainless steel pedals
  • Surround lighting in door area with Multivan logo projection
Hopefully that answers the question….! An extra £12k does get you quite an extensive list of upgrades. Mostly the upgrades are “style” related only but a few of the bigger upgrades are practical – such as heated seats, electric sliding doors, better noise reduction and so on.

Which is the best VW Transporter T7 engine?

The technology in the eHybrid is new to market but does have some of the best specifications on paper.

The eHybrid can achieve up 156.9MPG Petrol and 17.2 kWh/62mi Electric and delivers 218PS making it the most powerful option of the range. For this reason it is expected that this will become the most popular option to purchase.

The unknown question is whether it will be as reliable as the tried and tested Diesel and Petrol engines.

Innovation meets practicality. The Multivan.

A new era for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles sees the Multivan replacing the Caravelle 6.1. From its spacious design, incredible versatility to improved connectivity, and a choice of powertrains, including a plug-in hybrid option, Multivan can provide everything you or your business needs. And with up to seven seats, and a flexible interior, you'll have a working space perfectly in tune with your individual and unique operating needs, whether you're travelling for business or leisure. There’s even a multi-function table that’s perfect for working on-the-go when you’re spending a long day on the road.

The Multivan has many highlights

1

A new seating concept

One of the great strengths in the Multivan is the folding and easily removable individual seats in the rear, which now make it even easier to create different seating arrangements in just a few simple steps.
With space for up to seven seats, the rear five seats, which are up to 25 per cent lighter, can be moved and removed to suit. With the optional 6-seater package, the second row can be moved 180-degrees to create a conference style seating configuration. The full-width bench seat for the third row has been replaced by individual seats to allow single seats to be removed for complete flexibility.

1

Unrivalled sense of space

The Multivan is more flexible and spacious than ever. In the standard version, the Multivan offers 469 litres of luggage space behind the luggage compartment, extending to 1,844 litres (1,850 litres with panoramic glass roof) when you remove the rear seats. The full cargo capacity up to the front seats is 3,672 litres on the standard wheelbase model, extending to a maximum 4,053 litres in the long wheelbase model fitted with the panoramic glass roof.

1

Multifunction table

The innovative multifunction table can be moved between any of the seating rows, and for the first time can be used as a centre console between the front seats. Height adjustable, featuring three cup holders and a deep storage compartment, the multi-function table is perfect for working on-the-go or keeping the kids occupied during longer journeys.

The Multivan has an all-new exterior design that pays homage to the DNA of its predecessors, dating back to the 1985 Transporter T3.
The classic two-tone finish is underscored in the Multivan by a chrome band that runs centrally from the headlights to the rear.
Complemented by a wide selection of fine colours and alloy wheels – you can customise your Multivan entirely according to your personal taste.
Surround lighting in the door area - as standard on Style, optional on Life - projects the Multivan silhouette onto the floor as you enter.

The Multivan not only drives like a car, but the interior also boasts premium-quality materials. This is symbolised by the newly developed "Dark Woodgrain Optic“ or "Metal Grid“ trim dependant inlays and the two-tone, high-contrast seat upholstery, such as the optional "Savona“ leather version. Another highlight is the ergonomically designed and networked display landscape, which ensures a tidy, sophisticated look in the cockpit.

The T7 Multivan is essentially a passenger-carrying vehicle and only replaces the Caravelle T6.1. According to VW and Ford press announcements, as part of their Project Cyclone joint-venture for commercial vehicles and EVs, the T8 (new Transporter) medium van is scheduled for production at Ford‘s Otosan plant in Turkey and will be built alongside the new Ford Transit with which it shares a common platform. Production is expected to start later this year.

sounds interesting. . . .

got any links?

The plans for Ford to produce the next Transporter sized van have been in the making for a while now and the T7 definitely isn't that. It looks like VW have preferenced the development of their electrical platform over continuing with the 1 ton commercial vehicle. Will be interesting to see how the Transit underpinnings are made "VW-enough" to make it worth paying the badge premium for over a Transit.

In June 2020, Ford and Volkswagen issued a joint press statement announcing a partnership agreement covering a number of joint-venture projects for commercial vehicles and EVs. Under the agreement, Ford is responsible for developing the platform for both the one-tonne (Transit Custom and Transporter) and two-tonne (Transit and Crafter) models so it sounds like the VW Transporter medium van (probably T8) will be a Turkish-built badge-engineered Transit Custom. It seems likely VW will terminate production of Transporters T6.1s this year, most probably during their August shutdown, as the Hannover plant moves over to the manufacture of VW EVs (ID Buzz, etc.).

For more details, search for commercial vehicle related articles that refer to ‘Project Cyclone’. This link is worth checking out as it seems to hint at the new Transit medium van configuration (and possibly gives us a clue about the VW Transporter T8)… Ford reveals all-new E-Transit Custom electric van

FTFY ;)

Imagine this with a VW badge on it and this may well be what the new Transporter T8? panel van will look like (and one supposes what campervan builders will base their conversions on)...

Oh dear. What have they done. The new caddy (connect) was bad enough but end of an era. The new vans are awful looking in my opinion the new T7 looks like a 2012 ford galaxy from the side.

Not a fan...
