TPMS puzzling behaviour.

My van didnt come with TPMS so with help from @Pauly I got the indirect (no sensors in wheel valves) TPMS working.

Now every month or two the van pings up a low pressure warning, always on the nearside front. At first I thought it might be leaking air through the tyre bead.

However having done some investigation ie swapping the wheels round, and now had the wheels refurbed and new tyres about a month ago, its just pinged again. Same nearside front.

I am not puzzled as to why this is happening. Would be interested to hear peoples ideas as to what could be causing it or if its happened to anyone else.

Ignoring your tyre swaps etc.. is there actually a pressure loss on the near side front?
Or is the pressure fine and it’s just the indirect TPMS that’s reporting a loss when there isn’t?
Either way it’s odd.
If the near side front is losing pressure regardless of wheel / tyre fitment then is there anything in your driving style or regular route that might cause an impact on the near side front?
I’m thinking regular driving up or down a curb or a speed hump or similar, might cause a minor loss that adds up over time?
If the pressures are fine then I can’t think of a reason.

I had a problem with odd tyres on one axle. The tread depth was 8mm on one and 6mm on the other. Warnings came on every 200mls. Swapping tyres around to ensure the same tread depth on both wheels on the axle has fixed the issue. 2000mls and no warnings, i didn't expect Indirect TPMS to be so sensitive.

My van has done this occasionally for the last 2 years always front nearside and tyres have never lost pressure. I seem to think it’s when I’ve stopped in a layby for a few minutes then carry on but not always. I use the van for work and it only happens once or twice a month.

The OP’s problem isn’t related to wheels or tyres, it’s specific to the location, NSF.

I understand that, I was making the point how sensitive the Indirect TPMS is.

No loss of pressure.

Not last time I sdcanned, I will do a new scan tomorrow. I didnt reset the tyre pressures yet.

Thats even stranger that mine isnt the only van doing it. On the same NSF as well.

Does seem strange. Must admit I haven’t tried that hard to fix it as it’s just a bit annoying. Trouble is one day it might actually be a puncture!

Hmmmm, Coding TPMS on my van was on my list of changes I wanted to make, but if it is a bit sensitive to false positives maybe I won't activate it.

Yes I did wonder this myself but it does seem to happen on good roads with normal driving although it would explain why it’s always front nearside- more likely to spin on the loose dirt in the verge.

I haven’t looked at the TPMS settings in VCDS, I wonder if there are any threshold settings that can be tweaked to reduce the sensitivity on a channel by channel basis.

Exactly what I’ve found in the past.
Regarding pressure loss it seems to take an actual deviation of 20% of tyre pressure to activate an alert.
