Today has not gone as planned!!🤦‍♀️

Been away for the week ( from Manchester) ...30 miles off campsite in Ely and tyre blows. On A14 so pull into layby. Turns out due to a change of bank card my auto renewal with green flag didn't ho through and was cancelled. Paid 150 to AA to put on the spare. Now driving on Spare. Plan for tomorrow was to head into Cambridge for the day. But I need a new tyre and I've called around 10 local places and no one has the right size...looking for a 255/40/18
Foes anyone have any thoughts. Am told can only drive at 50mph and only for about 50 miles on the spare...I don't know what I should do...home is 200 miles away..and it's bank holiday!! HELP! X
What spare are you running? I’ve never heard of a van having a space saver spare, they are usually a full size normal wheel & tyre.

What happened to that "99y" post that came through on my email notification?
Either way, seriously get loads rated tyres and to avoid doubt get 103 rated, I started out with HiFly 255 45 18 and these are still less than £80 each fitted at various places, decent quiet tyres too.
Car tyres on a 2 1/2 ton van is waiting for a disaster. :(

The post you refer to is post 11.
We're all different, but I don't want my safety and that of other road users to depend on cheap Chinese tyres, I'd rather buy decent tyres which cost more but perform better.

Currently running Dunlop Sportmaxx but prior to that ran the HiFlys for years and they were competent tyres, as for the safety of other road users being down to the use of road legal but economy tyres then that's a bit of a stretch compared to someone running car tyres on a van?

Which always makes me laugh, a Range Rover weighs more than my T6, but presumably runs on "car tyres".
JLR will put the usual sticker on the door post and detail the tyre load and speed ratings in the handbook. They will be tyres designed to handle the weight and speed of the vehicle.
Typically they run huge rims in sizes shared by other large SUVs.
Sure, an owner who doesn’t know better might try and get ‘car’ tyres fitted but a) a decent garage would advise against that b) that’s on the owner for not checking and c) can you even get 21” tyres in a low load rating?
Plain daft to just assume JLR would not put an adequate load rated tyre on their vehicles and not helpful to the OP.

OP’s vehicle doesn’t seem to have tyres that are safe/legal in terms of weight rating and possibly aspect ratio either.
I’d suggest four new tyres of a specification that actually matches what VW says the van needs.

How did it even pass an MOT?
No wonder a tyre blew.

I agree the tyres should be rated to at least what VW suggests and that all 4 or 5 if a spare is carried and as soon as possible. Not trying to be an alarmist but does any one know what the insurance situation might be if the tyres are not change because I imagine that potentially it could be void. The tyres not properly rated is an offence. Just please do not put crap tyres on that is put on a recognised brand.

Probably not insured by default of not being roadworthy. However as the fuzz are busy arresting people for waving flags and stating the fu*king obvious it unlikely that any there will be any consequences any time soon.

Opened a right can of worms here haven't I!
Had the van four years- got tyres from a few garages and only ever swapped like for like regards to sizes. The last place I had the mot done at was a van/lorry/camper specialist place, but as you say they may not have checked them. The 2 I've had put on are Michelin.

In a weird way your bad day has probably prevented an even worse event. You have the opportunity to fix your tyre issue, through the advice from forum members. Yes its a big cost changing all 4 tyres but the consequences are untenable! ( £ 2500 fine / three points per illegal tyre / invalid insurance etc)

The 'normal' tyre ? I assume from that you mean a 16" steel wheel .
What are all the details on the side of that tyre ?
