Have you got hubcentric spacers on the front or maybe aftermarket wheels with spigot rings?

And let that be a lesson to all of us that never check the torque of our wheel bolts after 50 miles despite being advised to by the note on the tyre/workshop/dealers invoice.

If the lefthand side ones are a fraction loose, the wheels turn anticlockwise at speed, and that rotational force will cause the bolts to turn anticlockwise with them.

Check you have the correct wheel bolts installed, aftermarket alloys generally use tapered bolts and VW alloys always use radius bolts and the two are not interchangeable
Will do. The wheels were an optional upgrade from the converters so were on the van when I picked it up.
They don’t look like the OE bolts TBH.
Presumed they came with the wheels.

I’ve always re-torqued wheel bolts after 50-100 miles for precisely this reason. Although to be fair I’ve never had any that have needed much of a tweak that I can remember. Many tyre centres mention to do this too and it’s often printed on the receipt.

Good lesson that you can’t really tell a loose wheel by trying to wobble it, you need to get a wrench on the bolts. Glad you sorted the problem and it didn’t end more seriously.

You make an interesting point, but I know that in the Police where I worked, (I don't pretend to speak for every ex Police officer) we had new tyres fitted very often and the wheels were refitted but never re checked later. And these cars were doing hundreds of miles per 24 hours often at more than 100mph, yet I never heard of an issue.
Ultimately your tactic is both safe and reassuring so I'm certainly not knocking it.
