Been away for the week ( from Manchester) ...30 miles off campsite in Ely and tyre blows. On A14 so pull into layby. Turns out due to a change of bank card my auto renewal with green flag didn't ho through and was cancelled. Paid 150 to AA to put on the spare. Now driving on Spare. Plan for tomorrow was to head into Cambridge for the day. But I need a new tyre and I've called around 10 local places and no one has the right size...looking for a 255/40/18
Foes anyone have any thoughts. Am told can only drive at 50mph and only for about 50 miles on the spare...I don't know what I should do...home is 200 miles away..and it's bank holiday!! HELP! X

Facebook is usually your friend for stuff like this. Guessing your spare is a 205/65/16? If so then that’s a standard transporter size wheel and tyre. (Not like skinny space savers we get with cars). Put it on the back so you do not damage your gearbox and you will be fine. May get a ABS light come on because one tyre is bigger than the other so rolling diameters are different.

Go on camskill or black circle and order a tyre, you can look for a garage near by your destination to have it delivered and fitted by them. Or even use a mobile tyre fitter that will come to your campsite.

+1 for a facebook market place search from the local area. also consider just looking for some stock transporter wheels, you might find a set of cheap wheels with OK tyres that you could stick a pair of on that will get you home safely at motorway speeds for less money than you will be paying for an uncommon tyre size at short notice on a bank holiday!

Alternitvely, you might be able to buy a pair of similiar sized 18's that will be easier to get your hands on moving forward.

Or just two on the rear axle, mixing sizes in 20" wheels is considered normal with 40 profile on the rear and 35 on the front, obviously different widths too. :geek:

Facebook market place may have cone up trumps...20 miles from where I am ..has 2 Michelin tyres for ÂŁ50....BUT my tyres say '99y' at the end and these ones say '95y'.is that a problem?

A T28 needs 100 rated tyres as a legal minimum requirement. T30 is 101, T32 is 103.
It seems like even your existing tyres aren't appropriately load rated for your van, which is a problem.
I'd just buy 4 new tyres and I'd go either 255/45/18 or 235/55/18 with the correct load rating.
There is plenty of choice in both sizes.

Quite possibly why the AA technician said 50 miles at max’ 50 MPH? Even then they were sticking their neck out, if something happened during that 50 miles they could be implicated.

Make sure you go 103 rated to cover whatever version Transporter you've got, stick with the width at 255 if the wheels are around 8.5" wide, going to 45 which is the profile VW suggest for 18" wheels and you'll have a shed load of choice from budget to Rolex.
Just in case I'm going off on a tangent take a pic of your wheel and post it on here.

Sorry, I don't know what thus means?
There's lots of tyre info in the thread I've linked, including a good explanation of tyre load ratings.

If a converter or dealer has put the incorrect tyres on you probably have some grounds for compensation although probably not without a fight.
Worth a go if that’s the case.

What happened to that "99y" post that came through on my email notification?
Either way, seriously get loads rated tyres and to avoid doubt get 103 rated, I started out with HiFly 255 45 18 and these are still less than ÂŁ80 each fitted at various places, decent quiet tyres too.
Car tyres on a 2 1/2 ton van is waiting for a disaster. :(
