The Ford | T7 Conundrum

What really killed the 90's electric cars?

When manufacturers realized that in order to market and promote sales of electric cars....

... they had to make those ,diesel /petrol -powered
Engines the enemy ….
Agreed. And it would seem that the pathetic efforts then made in the 90s would then forever taint the new tech EVs of today in the mind of those who were driving in the 80s and 90s

Well, technically ICE vehicles are not good for us. So although some people might not like the messaging, it’s not wrong.
99% of the UK population breathes toxic air. It contributes to 500 deaths a week and costs the UK economy £27 billion a year in healthcare costs and lost revenue.

And remember, the much bigger factor in the 90’s is that government was panicking about leaded petrol and swayed, as ever, by big oil lobbyists, decided diesel was THE only other option. They merrily pushed that via tax incentives for years. They weren’t pushing EVs at all back then -despite it being common sense and common knowledge that breathing burnt fuel is not good for human health.

The GM EV1 trial of the 90s was an tremendous success, and mysteriously killed off for no logical reason. It wouldn't surprise me if pressure from some motor manufacturing or oil producing quarter was responsible.

Whatever, but imagine if they'd stuck with it; we'd potentially be a further 15 years more advanced with e vehicle technology than today.

Society has a great knack of predicting doom and gloom, and then manipulating events to bring doom and gloom about. In this case the objections from manufacturers and oil producers have worn thin enough to see through, but due to their profit motivated obstinance we're a decade and a half behind where we could have been.

Pathetic efforts with regard to promotion of said vehicles. Then some years later we were given positive news about of the Nissan leaf, which wasn’t any better.
Sadly the naysaying of the past has meant that EVs had to get, or surpass even, the point where the majority can say “ yes, that looks and performs like something that’s familiar “

Even after the mods put the kybosch on the last EV thread this ones morphed into it.
The EV thread should be brought back into life. That way people like you and Graham can just dip in if you want without feeling other threads are ‘hijacked’. Even when there are links to the subject.

It’s a topic worthy of discussion and relevant to VW vans and us owners.

Sad the mods just got reports to deal with on it. I didn’t see any insults or anything objectionable but I guess some people that don’t like to hear one side or the other and can’t find facts to back up their point may get a bit flustered and want to stifle free and open discussion?

Extremely relevant to the op question. Seeing as there’s more choice of electric ‘engines’ in the new range than any other.

Well, whatever. Wishing it ain't going to make them go away, and I for one am looking forward to seeing the new electric Transporter. The 6.1 version was so half arsed I'm surprised they bothered.

I'm presuming the petrol hybrid will be a Ford powertrain? The Internet suggests its "VWs e-hybrid system", but that could mean anything really.

No way until I have to and why should I . It has to work every day and their is such a scarcity of charge points 20 miles away were their is one. I have no intention on relying on mobile aps to chase a charge only to find it being used when I get their and then being 20 miles down. Electricity supply at my property is unreliable and because we are the only occupant at my postcode they are not in any hurry to reconnect supply when it is down. All the high tension line here are old and not suitable for fast charging so the e companies would need to invest a lot of cash to bring e spurs like mine up to calibre Repairs to lines have no priority it is numbers first that is how it works. Perhaps because aviation fuel is going to be so plentiful because air traffic is being increased I should reinstate my older more polluting vehicles and run them on that, it is only paraffin after all with a few additional additives. Like the aroma of paraffin reminds me of primus stoves. Maybe drive about in my tractors every farm has its own tanks. Then their are the winters e vehicle ranges are depleted and what about heating and lighting must take a toll on range. No point in pretending one is green if all older the gas guzzling vehicles in ones stable are not scrapped. I could buy an e vehicle and just let it rot unused to satisfy some statistic or other I suppose. No Hurry to go down that route and what does one do with the diesel vehicles that one finishes with cost over 60 grand to buy so it is still worth something the government are not giving cash away to scrap it. Little point in selling it to an other user they will still be driving it most probably in some conurbation town or city to which I rarely go. Majority of my driving is in the country. Sorry your sales patter has to improve to have me by one of those. You bonus will need to be looked at.

Consider yourself normal.
80% of new car purchases in the UK last year were not EV's.

Edited to make more sense grammatically and to correct my figure of 320,000…

I’m sure you’re not really calling the 381,970 people that bought BEVs and accounted for 20% of car sales in 2024 abnormal. More just saying the norm is still with ICE and hybrid when looking at absolute figures. Which is probably, as we still have free choice, as most people would expect.

Another thing to look at though is trends:

ICE sales have been dropping year on year while EV sales rise. That trend has been steady for a while now. Latest…

Not against e vehicles but would not be practical here as I have said. I could have once cycles to north Scotland does not make a cycle a sensible or practical choice of vehicle. What do they possibly offer me at this time. A headache in vehicle management, maybe in 10 years who knows but I may not even be here and that applies to a few others on her too I imagine. One can not accurately predict when the last breath comes so i wont worry about e vehicles any time soon when that time comes when I have to make a choice well that is for then. So unless I see an advantage and a real choice that is it.

The mods shut it down after you compared them to the Statsi police
Nothing to do with folk that can’t find facts.
