T6.1 Rocker Cover Crack + Gasket

After some advice, I have had a persistent oil leak spotted on the van, looked into it more today and appears the rocker cover gasket has gone and oil is leaking from where the oil fill spout is moulded to the rocker cover. It also appear the gasket has gone from the oil leaking on the other side of the engine. The van is a T6.1 3.5 years old and only done 42k, anyone had any issues like this before and what was rough cost to get it fixed? Spoke to VW and apparently my extended warranty doesn't cover oil leaks or damaged gaskets/rocker covers as its general wear and tear and they are not mechanical or electrical parts.

Broken rocker cover is not fair wear and tear.
Exactly what I said to them especially from the age of the van, they said there is a small chance it can be covered under warranty but only way to find out is to pay £110+VAT an hour for diagnostics

When you say "spoke to VW" do you mean the garage or the warranty people? People have found in the past very different answers so if you haven't it may be worth talking to the warranty folks directly about what is fair wear and tear - I would agree 3.5 years for a rocker cover seems short and the words in law are "lasts a reasonable length of time"

I have spoken with both my local VW dealer and then the approved used warranty team who my warranty is covered with both said the same thing sadly

Depending on how far you want to push things you have 6 years to bring a claim. That doesn't mean everything should last 6 years but if it should be expected that a rocker cover should last more than 3.5 years you can still use your consumer rights (assuming it's not a business vehicle) but the burden is more on you at that age to gather some proof of that.

I would also be tempted to question if the cracking is due to original miss assembly or incorrect torque settings. And I'd be tempted to do that in writing mentioning the consumer rights phrases - people may take more care on the record than on the phone or just talking.

Thanks for the info will have a look cheers

Hi, did you get to the bottom of the leak? I have similar and think its coming from the the rubber seals on the Rocker Cover that go around the Injectors. Any pointers would be a great help. Thanks

Hi Stevo, sorry for the lat response, turned out mine was the injector seals between the rocker cover and the injectors causing pooling of oil on the rocker cover above the injectors, went to a local specialist and cost around £300 all in to fix, gave up going to VW. Hope this helps
