T6.1 ‘Only Leave Vehicle In P Position’

Well my van appears to have fixed itself entirely, fault hasn't come back on the dash at all this week and the only thing I have done is vigorously moved the lever between P and D with ignition on and foot brake down. Locked the van til the dash sleeps and unlocked, started up and all is now good 👍
(Fingers crossed!! 🤞)
It can only be dust/debris/tarnish on a micro switch in the selector assembly, if it happens again I may strip out the selector and take some pictures or do a video of what I find.
Good luck getting yours fixed all!

Update:

Feedback from VW Commercial Van dealership is it's a component failure (which they see a few) - of the switch in the selector and requires an entire selector mechanism replacement, as the specific part can't be swapped out on its own. Cost is £875 + VAT so £1,050. Seems like a sub-par component to me....

They are lying to you, it’s a well known problem across VAG. I had exactly the same issue on my Golf R. Ask them why do sell a repair kit!
I fixed mine on the T6.1 as a diy job - cleaned the micro switch all good and no cost ! It may be of course that your issue is different. Good luck

Thanks, Robert - although I don't doubt that, but what do you do. Fortunately the work should be covered under the warranty that came with my van, but I now see why our premiums and warranty prices are so inflated :D. I wonder if it's worth raising with the dealership and/or querying with VAG directly.

Read a few threads about this on the seat cupra owners. If you are out of warranty its time to put the DIY gloves on.

DSG microswitch replacement help

Search

Just have to choose the right one.

Cant see it being a problem driving but could cause a problem taking the key out?

Just adding this for future searchers.

Always worth speaking to VW commercials. Depends on how far out VW warranty if they will help or not. As I said it is a problem they are aware of. If you don’t fancy fixing it yourself a good independent should be able to rectify the problem.

It's a 2021 6.1, so I'll certainly ask the question.

My headache for today is the Warranty company asking for a diagnostic report and itemised estimate, which is fair. However the VW Commercial garage are saying this will have to wait until they have the van back at the end of the month...I've stated surely this data is stored for me to be given, unless they didn't actually plug it in!

Update: Booked in at VW Commercial Wolves for the end of the month for a replacement mechanism (£524). It's through warranty, which has been approved, although they only pay for £60 an hour labour so I'll have to drop a couple hundred onto the final bill.

I did ponder binning the dealer off and having an Indy order and do the work, but I suspect I'd still get the £300 diag bill from VW if I were to do that. Not paid a penny yet though mind.

First post but I’ve got a 2020 T6.1 DSG with this fault. I’ve rang a few places who sell kits for other VAG models and they’ve told me its more likely be related to door lock signalling on transporters hence a lack of repair kits.

My 2019 T6.1 T32 DSG has started coming up with this fault. It goes away within a few minutes of driving or even seconds. My local garage lifted the gator saw a Black microswitch - order the black repair kit (its a choice of black or white repair kit for DSG)....Guess what it doesnt fit!....

£854 + VAT for the repalcement unit from TPS no mark up on it!

Photos for reference showing the black kit white kit and the one from the my van...Thanks

wondering how people have got this sorted other than dealer and warranty claim...

This is the part required...for reference my gear box is DQ500...apparently for Transporters there is NO little mirco switch to replace like on ALL other VW cars/DSG's.

If you've got the switch assembly off the van and it's failed anyway is it worth striping it down anyway to see what's inside?

Micro switches are so common that they are a commodity part the usual challenge is matching which one you need.

It's possible it's been "cost engineered" down to just some switch contacts in the assembly though (which maybe is what you mean by the last note) but even then if it's a matter of clearance or some surface cleaning it might get you some more life.

At 900 quid it's got to be worth a try?

I don’t know if this will help anyone but I had the same fault. I was able to remove the gear mechanism and replace the physical switch. It’s doable for a DIY. Took me about 3 hours. You have to remove some of dash trims and glovebox, the gear knob and cover. Once that’s all off, you can remove the gear mechanism, open it up and solder a new switch in. 7c26f5b0-2f6d-4195-8bc9-d1489e9ce2bd.webp

Yeah the module does not fit the transporter. HOWEVER! You can open up the unit and replace the switch. Just done mine. Total cost…..£10
