T6.1 HBA retrofit . . . ?

The correct mirror for the T6.1 with HBA is the same as for the MK7.5 Golf, Polo etc: "3G0 857 511 AM" but these don't come with a camera judging by the factory pics so it would seem that the T6.1 uses the A5 (R242) front facing camera for HBA when fitted.

However, looking at the wiring diagrams, there is a configuration where the HBA can be installed without the A5 (R242) main camera so this needs deeper research.

Are there any members with HBA but without the R242 front assist camera?

T6.1 can have HBA in two variants.
First as a extra feature of the windscreen mounted camera(aka A5) or second as a stand alone system (camera mounted in the rear view mirror housing).

I hope it’s worth the effort eventually. FWIW I have factory HBA & hate it. I find it clunky & inconsistent. It’s one of of things like keyless entry, someone had a bright idea in a marketing meeting, it got passed on to the engineers & they thought “meh!”

I'm also one of the weird ones who signal when turning left or right . . . . must be old school, I guess.

That's interesting, your HW is 7E0 857 511 C which is a T6 part too so would suggest that the mirror James has will actually work. Assuming its the F or G version

Exactly, and that’s the problem, the HBA in my experience is too slow to react, I end up getting flashed because there’s a very slight delay between an oncoming vehicle coming into range & the HBA dipping the lights. It’s worst when going around bends or on a road with dips in it. I can see the lights of an oncoming vehicle waaay before the HBA has dipped the lights. It’s a reactive system, not predictive. HBA turns you into that “inconsiderate b******d”

OK I hear you on that one - but may I ask you whether if you don't want to wait for the HBA to kick in, can you flip the stalk and override the HBA yourself? i.e. as soon as you pull the stalk, the light will dim without waiting for the HBA?
May I assume that on straight(ish) roads, the HBA behaves better?

When you have HBA, pulling the stalk back (ooer matron) flashes the main beam on the first pull, it deactivates the HBA on the second pull. So what happens is :- HBA fails to dip the lights quick enough, oncoming driver flashes you, you pull the stalk back to dip lights but have to do it twice to cancel the HBA. Like I said, it’s clunky. Then you find the opposite happens when you go down roads with lots of reflective road signs, the HBA catches its own reflection & thinks it’s a car & dips the lights. It’s just not as accurate as the mk1 eyeball. At the end of the day, all it’s saving you is a flick of a switch.
Normally when people pay for something, it’s the best thing since sliced bread, it’s against human nature to say that something you’ve bought is rubbish. In this case I’m being honest, I paid money for something that I can really do without.

Agree, default factory configuration is not the best
but if you know how to do a bit of tweaking then your HBA will just work perfectly.

Got to say, I use my HBA all the time. Very rarely I feel the need to over ride it and turn it off (Push the stalk away from you to cancel it). It works far better than the HBA in the wife's car. Perhaps because the camera is higher?

Mine now looks a lot like the ones in your pics (above) and I understand that the CAN gateway is no longer a part of the BCM but is the black bow on the left (the one with the plug removed - above).

I've looked for a Gateway wiring diagram but can't find one - does one exist for the 6.1?

I was hoping to trace the pins 54 and 57 directed in the T6 installation instructions to see if the same connections apply to the gateway.
BTW, I've invested in a VCDS HEX-V2 USB 3VIN Package so will be able to do a scan soon, if that helps with the diagnosis.

I was hoping to trace the pins 54 and 57 directed in the T6 installation instructions to see if the same connections apply to the gateway.
BTW, I've invested in a VCDS HEX-V2 USB 3VIN Package so will be able to do a scan soon, if that helps with the diagnosis.

Can HIGH pin 3 mirror to pin 17 Gateway
Can LOW pin 8 mirror to pin 7 Gateway

Those pins are likely populated so you'll need to join onto them but those are where they need to go
 
the opposite happens when you go down roads with lots of reflective road signs, the HBA catches its own reflection & thinks it’s a car & dips the lights.
That's an interesting one - because mine is just the opposite - reflections from road signs have no effect on mine but dips on oncoming cars.
Is yours T6 or T6.1, what's the high beam type H7 or OEM LED?

Mine’s a t6 with OEM LED. I really want to like the HBA, so any tips to tweak it would be appreciated.

I'm still trying to retrofit HBA to my 6.1 but not getting very far.

The hardware is in place and the wiring done (as per directions on this forum) - but of course may not be correct!
I have VCDS and have coded what I believe needs coding but the MFD is still showing 'Fault: Light Assist' when attempting to activate it.

Attached, is an abbreviated AutoScan (done today) showing only the faults . . . and being new to VCDSI was wondering if the 'no signal/no communication' messages included, might indicate something as fundamental as the CanBus's inability to talk to the mirror/camera - maybe because of a wiring fault or even the wrong mirror . . . ?

So, once again, any comments gratefully received from any more experienced and wise VCDS gurus out there! :)

If you have HBA compatible A5 camera already onboard(LANE ASSIST) then you can activate HBA manually or use this coding dongle.

As a bit of a thickie and a non VDS User, I hope that enabling HBA as simple as the instructions on the Kufatec website!
I've ordered two of these dongles to apply HBA to two T6.1 panel vans (which both already have Lane Assist and the little camera at the top of the windscreen in front of the rear view mirror).
I'm now suffering from post order anxiety as I don't know if my cameras are A5 or not!
I was only going to order one dongle to see if I could apply the coding to both vehicles, but the Kufatec website clearly states one dongle per vehicle and with a carriage cost of over £50 I didn't want to take the risk!
