T6.1 Discover Media MIB 3 USB Map Updates

Does anyone know how to confirm that the map update is actually happening on the T6.1 Discover Media "MIB 3"??
I have actually updated the maps a couple of times over the few years we’ve had our van, but each time I do it, it does my head in!
I’ve got the new files on a USB plugged in to the USB-C socket and turn the ignition on, without starting the engine - and wait……
It’s been sitting in the garage (using our Victron multiplus trickle charge to keep the battery topped up) for about 6 hours yesterday and another 3 or 4 today, and the map version hasn’t changed.
Last time I did it, I noted that it took about 6 hours over 2 days. This is insane!
I don’t understand how a service department could ever do these updates - they’d have to keep the vehicle for days just to update the bloody maps!?
The other 2 VWs I had before this would actually show that something was happening when I updated the maps and it only took a reasonably short time.
We don’t drive our van much lately so I’ve given up and just going to see if it ever updates when we drive it next. It’s as if we have to take it for a long drive just to get the maps to update???
But that’s just me guessing - since it gives no indication of what is happening, I don’t know if last time really took 6 hours, or it just worked when we drove the car that last time….
It shouldn’t matter if the engine is running or not - the instructions sure don’t mention starting the engine.
My other frustration is I can’t tell what version of the map database is in the huge tar download file - sadly I didn’t keep a record of the name of the last file I used. I just saw that the new file was dated November 2024 and my last update was October 2024.
So there is even a risk that my new update is actually the same database version 23.12 that is already installed! So the update won’t do anything anyway if that’s the case.
Insanity!
Does anyone have any tips on how to make this process less annoying??

Dang, it's quiet around here. So no-one else here updates their maps via USB?
So far my update has gone nowhere for 2 weeks, then totally off the rails this week when we finally went for a long drive....
We now have NO DATABASE and the car just sits there trying to load a missing database for hours.
To add insult to injury, it seems to have also broken the wifi connection as we can no longer connect our phones to CarPlay via wifi! The wifi network is not showing up on our phones.
I've reformatted the USB and copied the files onto it again in the hope that the last version was corrupt and this version is ok. Until we have a map database I'll try to ignore the missing wifi. 🤯

No idea, we have that HU in a Touran but I've never tried to update the maps. Just use Waze or Google maps through Android Auto now.

I've redently downloaded Morgan Freeman's voice onto Waze. Having the Speaker of the House, Vice President, President and God himself give directions in soothing tones is quite nice.

LOL.
I could use god's help atm!
I can't even use CarPlay at present, thanks to the lack of wifi, unless I use a USB cable, which I rarely do.

By the way, is it ok to leave the ignition switched on for hours at a time (assuming the battery is kept charged as above)?
I've never liked leaving car ignition switched on if the engine's not running, but VW in their wisdom have removed the accessory position from the key, so I don't see that I have much choice if I want to update my maps, assuming I don't need to go on a long drive !
I really hate this process. I'll need a good reason to ever update it again!

I recently updated my maps via USB. But mines a daily driver so was easy enough. The update just stops when you do and carries on where it left off. I'll check the version when I pop out in about 15 minutes if that helps

Looked at the files and they were built 02/01/24 so 23.12 is probably the latest update. That's is what it is showing on mine. Don't know how often VW actually update the database

Mine update over the air, check you version information as you may already be on the latest.

As per my initial post, the date of the update is more recent than my version.
Are you in Australia? As far as I can work out, I can’t update over the air in Australia.
I can’t get mine to connect to external wifi.

That’s interesting - I had version 23.12 when I started this process this month. Surely mine would not have replaced the database if the new one was the same version? I guess if my new version was corrupt it might have got confused. What a wonderful robust system! 🤯
I find it hard to comprehend how this new head unit got approved as the new system, given how the older systems actually let users see wtf was happening, and only took less than an hour to update!

After several more days of nothing happened I finally caved and contacted some competent VW service people who confirmed I need a dealer to fix my navigation system, having followed VW's instructions on how to update the maps as I have done twice before!
Apparently our 2 year old firmware version 0809 can be problematic with map databases and the latest firmware version is 1969.
So it's booked in to the local dealer next week.
Of course like all dealers I didn't get to speak to anyone knowledgeable- I just told the receptionist about the fault and they booked it in, so I just have to hope that they have someone who actually knows about this stuff. Hopefully we get the firmware as well as the maps updated to the latest versions after all this! I'm very curious to see if we do get the latest firmware.
