All AT tyres on test fare badly even on gravel and on wet grass. The braking distances in the wet are much longer too. The conclusion is that a quality all season tyre is much better in all conditions.

I speak German and don't entirely disagree with their conclusions.
But I also have a postgrad degree in a STEM subject and think their methods are laughable. If they arrived at a valid conclusion it was by accident rather than by scientific integrity.

Looking at some of their testing techniques and style of driving I tend to agree @Sasquatch.
Thank you Richard T6.1: It is as I have always felt and tried to suggest that unless one absolutely needs All Terrain Tyres because they travel of road frequently are a farmer, farm worker, vet, rescue service, live off road or something similar than All Terrain tyres should not really be part of you vocabulary and that one either has multiple sets of rims for specialist winter and summer tyres use or fits All Season Tyres, the very best all season tyres are very good on snow or ice almost matching true W tyres. In the UK we can not use studded tyres. Comparative tests show the performance of All Season tyres in all environments against Winter and summer. tyres. Tyres from leading Brands do very well. The Michelin Cross Climate 2 has been one of the leading As tyres in all weathers but other brands have caught up. Michelin have now brought out Michelin CrossClimate 3 which should reset this tyre at the top of the AS tyre mark. What ever the tyre if travelling in winter conditions a useful mark to look for is the 3 Peaks Mud and Snow

Just fitting tyres because of looks is madness what ever tyres that one chooses they should be what is best for the environment they will be working in. I do feel that Winter tyres or tyres with 3 Peaks Mud a Snow validation should be used during the winter for safety for the vast majority of people in the UK the best compromise is the All Season Tyre they are also more than capable of extracting vehicles out of a wet campsite. My great fear is that with so many people swapping over tyres blindly following fashion and vanity to All Terrain Tyres that there will most likely be an increase in road accidents and that legislation will follow eventually. It is not only people on this forum its a trend.

That's why I went for road biased ATs. As aforementioned, they're better on tarmac than the standard factory supplied fuel economy tyres in all conditions.
In a similar vein, Davanti all season tyres are horrific for example. Much as I dislike BFG ATs I'd sooner them than Davanti 3PMS, Dynamo H-Street, and some others, which are woeful.
There is much merit in that which you say, but the generalisation is so broad its positively frayed around the edges. As a general rule of thumb I'd suggest you're well in the ballpark, but there are too many exceptions to apply the rule blindly.
With Michelin, Hankook, etc, 3PMS tyres all weether hoops you're likely sorted. Lovely boots. As you drift away from the top quality 3PMS all weether boots the advantage is less certain.
I agree that there are many brands and styles of AT tire some do not even display 3PM&S symbol though I have noticed over the years that many brands are submitting to this. I also realise that there is a huge range in performance in AS tyres from the very best to the very worst the latter are just not fit for the road and this is also true of many summer tyres also. It just surprises me that in a motoring forum, where one might normally expect more informative views and desires for what is best that so many just follow a vain fashion. I realise that their are professional drivers on here such as your self who could probably last all year on the worst bald tyres but I doubt that you would encourage anyone else to do so, that also there will be people here that really need that sort of tyre but I hope that you might agree that we surely have a responsibility to at least warn of the dangers and pitfalls.
Some appear to have gone from the ill fitting banded elastic band look, many of which are illegally stretched beyond legal limits, too the balloon Off Road tyre, neither really the best choice. I do agree that the video is not scientific and short but it does show the general deficiencies. Perhaps the Tyre Test Review might do a better far longer presentation and a better adherence to at least a scientific basis and not sensation. It does concern me about the numbers and with so many request about off road tyres and that this will be mirrored in other forum with other vehicles. If only a small number of people had these tyres well that is that is one thing but do we really want an epidemic of them.

It seems to be a trend indeed. Besides (camper)vans I see more and more shiney fashion SUVs on big AT tires rolling up & down the luxury shopping streets here in Amsterdam. Many (most?) people seem to be clueless - or worse - they just don't care that their 'cool looking tyres' could ad 3, 4 or more car lengths to their braking distance in an emergency. Or that on normal roads, these tyres perform significantly worse in every aspect you can think of compared to a decent AS or summer tyre. It's just vanity and (perceived) image that matters, it seems. I do think (and hope) that the vast majority of people simply don't know.
I'd say all this is being overthought....don't forget we're talking about a camper van here....not a track day car or off road racer. All legal and what they look like is my priority.
You’ve obviously never come down a hill in a 3tonne vehicle in the rain, hoping it’s going to stop at the T junction at the bottom.
Even worse is being at the bottom of the hill, and looking in your rear view mirror & hoping that 3tonne vehicle coming down the hill, is going to stop before it pushes you into the path of that oncoming HGV…..

My spare is a steelie, but the tyre profile has been selected so the rolling diameter matches that of the swamper tyres. Mine is mounted on the tailgate for extra swamper kudos.
