Steel wheels - decision time

IMG_9343.webpIMG_9346.webpIMG_9344.webp

New wheels on. Rides much better and more the look I was going for. Thanks to @BognorMotors for the help.

Noted that it’s riding nose-up. Suspension is on the future list of things to throw money at…

Now I just need to solve the centres. They’re 17mm bolts, so I’m debating centre caps or perhaps just something to cover the hub end. Is there anything that’ll slot into the middle?

My steel rims look superficially similar . If you fined a cover for the centre of the wheel put it up here because I could do with some also. gets a little rusty and muddy.

I sprayed my steelies with the Bilt hamber clear wax type stuff also did dorts new polo alloys
Hopefully reduce corrosion
That is a good idea, my rims have not rusted only the centre where the caps usually go but I guess it will only be time and wax sound like a good plan. Is this stuff available in spray cans or is it the sort of stuff prayed on chassis with a Styrrup type pump or spray gun? Does Halford do something like that would you know?

They look really good. I’m leaning this way with mine at the moment and have also been looking at the JBW/S+S wheels before considering these. I’ve also been running the AT vs AS tyre decision through my head so it’s good to see how the Cross Climates look for this use case. The ability for the JBW to take the standard centre caps is a pro for me. Was it just availability that ultimately led you to these over the others?

This is the stuff … hardly tell it’s on and power wash proof

I have the Falkens on and zero complaints from me

Yeah just availability.

I’ve got a plan. I’ve got some 65mm centre caps from my old wheels and the OD of the hubs is 65mm. I’ve bought some 65mm ID silicone pipe which I’m going to cut down into short sleeves, slip them over the hubs and seat the caps inside. Hopefully there’s enough interference to be secure. If not, I’ll whack some silicone sealant or glue in there. Watch this space.

That sounds fun! Perhaps a suitable bottle top might be available.

The 65mm ID was pretty much bang on for fitting over the exposed bit of the hub. The centre caps were actually a bit smaller (probably 63mm OD at the securing clips). So I used a zip tie to pinch one end tight so the end cap was secure, then overwrapped it with black tape to stop the zip tie falling off the end. The whole thing was then secured to the hub with a bead of superglue, which should be brittle enough to remove with a bit of a twist in the future.

Quick sketch, if it helps make sense (dotted line is centreline):
