Steel wheels - decision time

Oh that's very cool. So are they the Land Rover wheels 18"

Yes, banded to 9" fronts and 9.5" rears.

Always loads of sets of them on Facebook Marketplace for very little money.

Straight fit apart from needing a spigot ring

What size tyres are you running, they do look very smart

Hi @cubcampgrumpy can you confirm whether yours is a T32 with the bigger brakes please? I have some similar ones from another brand that foul the callipers on my T6.1. Cheers.

The 65mm ID was pretty much bang on for fitting over the exposed bit of the hub. The centre caps were actually a bit smaller (probably 63mm OD at the securing clips). So I used a zip tie to pinch one end tight so the end cap was secure, then overwrapped it with black tape to stop the zip tie falling off the end. The whole thing was then secured to the hub with a bead of superglue, which should be brittle enough to remove with a bit of a twist in the future.

Quick sketch, if it helps make sense (dotted line is centreline):
Oh and for the record the centres are still on - the superglue is holding fast. I had to have a tyre replaced while away over the last week and the garage were quite happy to crack the cap off to replace the wheel. I just superglued it back on again when I got home.

I'm about to join the defender steels club!
What size tyres do you find best? I been looking at 235/55R18 as need the load rating for T32 also

Perfect....that's what I have had for a few years now. General Grabber AT3 235 55 18. Last forever, quiet and brilliant whether in minus 20 or plus 40 degrees.

I looked at the general grabbers but not great reviews on wet roads, so was looking at Goodyear Vectors instead

I've never had any issues. My main need is they're strong and last. I live rural and often end up on muddy verges, in pot holes etc. On the flip side I drive about 8k a year in Spain, Portugal, Greece and many other hot and cold countries...this set have done almost 50k, the last set did 58k and many sets before on Range Rovers did the same. That's the reasons I stick with them.

We have GG AT3's on our pick-up and its laughable in the wet on tarmac .
The tyres are approx 4 years old and it doesn't carry a whole lot of weight over the rear wheels which don't help .

Having had pick ups, all of them are deadly on wet tarmac regardless of tyre choice. Its the combination of stiff leaf springs, 200hp and about 300kg of nothing sitting over the driven wheels....I wouldn't put the lack of traction solely to the tyre.
