Staggeringly confused

So yet another post on tyre and wheel size - sorry! Currently on 18's and want to move up to 20's. Read lots on tyre and wheel sizes and the concept of staggered set ups. Can you run staggered tyres on the same size rim say 245/45/20 on the front and 265/40/20 on the rears or do you need different width rims? TIA.

That's what staggered wheels are, different widths.
If the wheels were the same width they wouldn't be staggered.

Why would you want to run different sized tyres on same width wheels?
 
They'll look stupid. The whole point of wider rear tyres on wider rear wheels is so that the sidewall stretch/buldge will match the fronts.
