I've got it back and it works!
Apparently it was the J927 module which is behind the rear panel on the back of the wheel arch that had failed. I'm told it had got too hot due to the amount of fluffy insulation I had in there ... I must admit I find that unlikely but there you go.
I'm told that module (there's also a module.in the door itself) is identical left to right so swapping them over if one side is working is an easy way of diagnosing the problem. VW didn't do that as I have a bed bolted in on the other side.
Communication from VW was poor, it sounded like two modules AND the soft close motor were changed from the phone conversations I've had with them, though they did give me updates every day so that was good.
They let me talk to Alex the tech who worked on it, which was very good and he was spot on, definitely knew his stuff and is a proper Transporter fan as well.
Edit: they washed it as well and was all under warranty.
So pleased to have it back!
Edit 2: so glad it wasn't just a fuse!
