Seat Cleaning

Has anyone removed the original seat material and washed them?
I'd like to do this but is there anything I need to know that could ruin them.
If it's a simple case of just washing them then what temp in washing machine and should they be dried natural or can they be tumble dried.

If it were summer...that's what I'd do.
But it will never get a chance to dry properly up here in chilly Scotland.
That's why I thought removing the cover might be an option.
