Restoring original USB for car play?

Please forgive the potentially dumb question - first post here, but long time lurker. I've not done anything with car electrics for over 10 years since I broke the wiring loom on my BMW installing a Parrot kit 10 years ago!

I've just picked up a T6 2018 with a MIB 2 stereo with MirrorLink/CarPlay/Android Auto. It says on the spec sheet it had MirrorLink, so I'm assuming this is the original stereo. It previously had an Alpine unit in it.

When I went to plug in the USB in the dashboard, the phone didn't charge. Low and behold the module just isn't connected and I think this is non-standard and has been modified for the Alpine unit:

There are no cables visible in the gap behind (I even got my endoscope down there for a good hunt around.)

Am I right in saying there should also be a USB in the comfort dash, because it had comfort dash from the factory? Or was that an optional extra on top of the comfort dash? The 12v works fine. (There's a blanking plate above the 12v).

The yellow connection on the back of the stereo is for USB isn't it? The only problem is I can't see where the wire goes to. it's wrapped up with the rest of the cables and disappears off behind the dashboard toward the steering wheel and I can't locate any loose wires behind the stereo anywhere.

I'm assuming that's the original cable... so I could just buy a new one that goes from the module to the usb in the dashboard? Or in this setup does that cable go somewhere else that I'm meant to connect to instead, e.g. a shared module or something. (Part # 5Q0035726E with the cables from eBay is about £25-£30.)

Thanks in advanced for any guidance!

Potentially useful spec sheet numbers:
  • 4N3 COMFORT DASHBOARD
  • UI4 ELECTRIC INTERFACE FOR EXTERNAL USE, AUX-IN JACK, USB (IPOD-CAPABLE)
  • 9WT MIRRORLINK
  • I7A MIB2 STANDARD PQ RADIO PLUS EU/ROW

I guess you need to find the end of the OE wiring if you’re going to reinstate it !
Comfort dash does not get both USB by default it has to be ordered but if it did get them then the cable leaving the rear of the headunit would go to a USB splitter box in the dash (along with a 12v supply) then a cable on from there to each of the USB outlets

I think I may have 1 or 2 USB outlets and bits at my unit that may work in there will have a look when I’m there next, if you do make any progress with it be aware that single outlet and dual outlet(using the splitter box) have different cables and outlets, 1 x 6 pin for solo vs 2x 4 pin for dual

And yes that module looks like it’s been gutted and had an alternative outlet fitted inside it
You have to find the OE wiring as the usb cable is not data connection (4 cores) the plug you are looking for will have the matching 4 pin Fakra plug along with 2 additional 5v power pins making six cores in total

Yes that looks correct but the wiring must be there as it’s integrated into the vehicle loom, if you have a rummage around behind the glovebox I suspect it will be tucked in there somewhere

Not sure if it will help but you can follow the two 5v power cables coming out of the iso block aswell they go to the same place ?

The usb lead with a green plug will be just above the glovebox, guaranteed.

We have the correct usb sockets in stock, will take 5-10 mins to swap it all back over

Remove the part that the arrow is pointing to, split it down and remove the aftermarket usb , then the original one will slot straight back in
