Replacement Circuit Board For Gear Selector Backlight

Hey guys. I was doing some work on the van this weekend to get a smart charger and leisure battery installed. I took some pieces of the dash off to wire the charger into the ignition, and in doing so I managed to snap the ribbon that connects the lighting panel to the LED that illuminates 'P' on my gear selector.

I've tried soldering but it's just too fiddly compared to my levels of competence with a soldering iron. Does anyone know what the part number is or where I might be able to get a replacement? I've done some searching but don't appear to be able to find anything.

The rest of the unit still works, I just don't have a backlight behind 'P' which isn't the end of the world but is driving my OCD mad.

EDIT: Before anyone says it, I have tried Googling what appear to be the part numbers on the sticker but don't appear to be able to find it anywhere.

Might be worth a chat to this fella. He specialises in changing instrument LED’s so I guess he’s handy at micro soldering. He might be able to repair it

Did you ever have any luck finding the part? I’ve done the same to mine!!

Hi - whilst wrestling to remove the centre lower dash over the gear selector without disconnecting the plug I have managed to rip out half of the led pcb and snapped 2 of the tiny connecting strips. Have attempted repair with predictable result 3 connectors are now under a blob of solder. I've tried to source online but without success - I may be calling it the wrong thing. Can anyone help with sourcing? Would a competent person be able to repair?
Thankd

Hello....

Hello,

I hope you don't mind me asking you a question! You answered a post here: Replacement Circuit Board For Gear Selector Backlight and very kindly gave the poster some advice about the part required for the light that sits under the DSG gear strip indicating what gear you are in.....

I've got the same problem in our 2019 T6 in that the lighting behind the gear indicators has mysteriously stopped working. I've tried to get the part you mentioned but the VW garage says it only fits a T5 and for a T6 I need to buy the whole assembly (£500+ plus for parts alone).

They had originally said they'd replace it under warranty (which is about to run out) but when they went to do so they said it was broken when the converter replaced the material around the gear stick with leather to match the seats so wasn't a warranty item. Despite me assuring them that it worked when we bought the van in September and stopped working in the last couple of weeks!!

I don't suppose you have any idea what part may fit a T6 do you please? Or where I may get one?

I thought it was worth a try asking you!! I'm not used to driving automatics and I find the fact you can't see where drive and reverse are in the dark very, very disconcerting!! But I can't seem to find out how to get it repaired without paying £500 plus for the parts and another couple of hundred for the fitting!!

Hope you don't mind me asking.

Kind regards
Deborah

That part is not listed in the parts catalogue at all...
You would need to lever off the gaiter cover and look at the part for the part number on it..

As @Deaky said earlier there will be people who can repair this if it’s just a ribbon cable replacement.

Hi Deborah, I just had my shift lever replaced, and I am pretty sure I was in SMC Tonbridge when a rude technician was talking to you.

Did they even look at it or just said the leather is replaced and therefore no warranty?

Hello @Paul_f

Yes that was me!!

They had said first off that they could not repair it at all because the gaiter had been replaced and therefore the warranty would not cover the light. Even worse, the light itself no longer comes as a separate part apparently so they'd said that I would need a whole new gear unit and that would be upwards of £600 just for the part.... what I was trying to get them to tell me (and my apologies for being so rude as to budge in to your conversation) was how they had managed to replace yours without presumably having to pay £600 but I guess if yours was done under warranty then the fact it only comes as one complete unit shouldn't be an issue - but they seemed very reluctant to answer that question, just kept saying that mine wasn't able to be repaired under warranty or not - where I just wanted it fixed and wanted them to help me find a fix that wouldn't cost £600!!

They repeatedly told me it must have been broken when the van was converted and the leather gaiter replaced, but the van is second hand to us - we bought it in September and it was working then, it's just stopped in the last few weeks and I find it really disconcerting you can't tell what gear you are in as I'm very used to driving manual cars.

The technician was very, very defensive at first (which is what you overheard) as he thought I was arguing if the part should be replaced where actually I was trying to get him to look at a photo of the part from a breakers yard to ask if that was the part they needed and if I bought that, could it be fixed for less than £600! I hated the whole conversation.... I felt very awkward and while I am not sure he meant to be rude it really did come across that way.

However, he did eventually twig what I was asking, looked at my photos from the breakers yard, agree it was the right part and that if I bought it, said he should be able to detach the bit that's needed to make the illumination of the gears work and all should be fine. He agreed my second issue of a rather alarming squeal when starting from cold was a warrenty issue and said that they'd initially said 'no' to that just because the diesel heating header tank is in the way of fixing it. I said I would get Webasto to remove that first and it's now booked back in for the 3rd of Jan to have my gear lights and my squeal sorted - hopefully under warranty for the latter but I'll have to pay for the gear selector light.

Sorry again for barging in to your conversation!! I did think they were a bit dismissive and didn't even want to consider that I had the same issue as you!
