I've had a few pairs of Salomon Quest 4 GTX boots, and they are very comfortable but not great in the winter as they aren't very warm nor very waterproof after awhile, they are also starting to get quite expensive! So....... what else is out there? I've a good pair of leather boots for more serious winter/wet days, but I'd like recommendations for something similar to the Salomons please.

I wear Scarpa boots and have had the same pair for 4 years with no problems. Waterproof up to the tops and I find them warm and comfortable and being a veteran commando I cannot get out of the habit of wearing Halls Commando socks :D.

scarpa or meindl, they dont come cheap but you get what you pay for and they should last for years if looked after properly

My wife has had a couple of pairs of Meindl Borneo (all leather) boots and she swears by them. I need a wider fit and my last two pairs have been Lowa Renegade GTX with custom orthotics and I really like them (and will buy again when the current ones are cream cracker). I don't think either are particularly suited to mountain trekking but for the lower level stuff that we do they are great. That said, neither are particularly cheap.

Good strong winter boots, a bit warm for mid summer. There is a method of lacing that stops the tongue from twisting as you walk, glad I worked it out otherwise they would have been returned. No breaking in required.
Strength is normally a trade off against weight.

Some of the best prices are from online dealers in France and Germany.
I found many UK dealers don’t have the more expensive boots in stock so resorted to going to the mainland European dealers. Returning goods to mainland Europe is not as simple as it once was (what a surprise), that said it’s not as bad as I expected apart from a £40 shipping bill.
I recently bought some Scarpa boots and found them very narrow, ended up with 2 UK sizes up to get the required width.

Just something to consider...unless you NEED a waterproof membrane, remember that the membrane will make feet hotter and sweatier and that they are only as waterproof as the very large hole in the top of them.

I've been a Meindl fan for years, they've been ready to wear straight out the box but recently as I couldn't find the type I wanted I switched to the Hanwag Tatra, they're just as good and seem to be more waterproof but this could be as they're still newish. Goretex linings are great but I find they leak with age, so the less stitching in the uppers the better. I'm poor at maintaining my boots, I give them a brush under the tap and let them dry naturally, that's it. Don't forget the value of comfy socks and decent insoles (Supafeet Green/Trailblazer in my case). In winter I wear winter boots with firmer soles for crampons and ice/snow work and a warmer heat reflective insole. I get through a pair of normal boots about every 2 years, the goretex lining is usually gone by then and the grip on the soles has worn to such a state that they provide little grip on some surfaces. Time to get rid. I've resoled my winter boots and might do so again.

Everybody's feet are different and one boot may be great for one person and not another, if they don't fit you'll soon regret it.

All good recommendations, and if you can, go to a decent shop and try some. All our feet are different and fit is critical.
