Recommend me a economical motorway cruiser.

I don't always need the van for work, so I'm thinking about a car for when it's just me travelling. My needs... economical, 50 mpg minimum. Petrol or EU6 diesel. Golf size or bigger ( I like a bit of metal around me ). 2-3 years old. Not the PSA 1.6 diesel in all it's guises.

I'm pretty much set on a Golf TDI or TSI, but interested to know what else is out there for a similar budget.

No banganomics please.

Basically just a Toyota so it's likely to be as reliable as gravity and I've heard good things about Suzuki dealers.

My van is mainly weekend/holiday use so daily i have a Mk7.5 Golf R-line that I've had since it was 2 months old. it has all the whistles and bells and normally on a run gets 60mpg+...I've thought about changing it, but it does everything i ask of it and not sure what else i would want so just plod on with it.

Its the 2nd golf daily I've had, I've tried other makes and models but always seem to be back to VAG
