Practical wheel/tyre combo for full laden T6.1

I’ve got a T6.1 work van fully loaded with around 800kg and have 18” Amarok wheels with standard tyre size 255/45/r18. Suspension has been upgraded with KONI and I’m very slightly lowered when laden (I think around 30mm) so the arches aren’t too big.

Roads in Sydney aren’t amazing everywhere and I’d like to have more comfort with potholes and sometimes slightly “off road” locations.

One thing thought is going smaller wheels again like 17/16” for more sidewall. Or maybe I go slightly larger tyres with my current 18 - but ideally I would like to have a spare wheel that matches too so I’m leaning towards staying with OEM combos.

The Devonport 17” and Clayton 16” look nice enough for me aesthetically.

What wheel size and tyre combo would provide most comfort and is practical? thank you!

Hope it's ok to start another one of these threads! We have threads for 19s and 20s, but I've spotted a few T6s looking really nice on 17s and I couldn't find a thread for this wheel size.

I'd stick with your wheels but with 235/55/18 tyres - more sidewall should equal more comfort.

Some people have suggested this! And it’s more affordable for me not to change wheels.

Yes, I've got a 16" spare too, so 235/55/18 on the road wheels and 215/75/16 on the spare, which is 1.8% bigger than the road wheels but it'd get me to a tyre depot OK
Or, to put it in perspective, it'd be the same as driving with 3 bald tyres and one brand new one.





Actually, 205/75/16 would be a better size match, (only 0.1% different) but I couldn't find one load rated, so I stuck with 215/75/16.

I run Devonports with 235/65/17 Falken Wildpeaks, I regularly run cross Europe loaded. When I say loaded I really do mean LOADED. I've a LWB Shuttle so its 3.2T however I wont go into the number I know I have been up to.

In UK sets of Devonports quite cheap but I suspect not so much so in Oz.

I do wish I got the Devonports when I swapped wheels. I found some affordable sets but I need to have them painted black which costs a bit

Is 235/65/17 a standard size that you can match your spare with?

I’ve got the same tyre in my spare under the van. It’s a squeeze to get it in and part deflated it however I keep a Milwaukee m12 air compressor onboard.

hello again! So I was able to find load rated 205/75/16 tyres locally that are load rated. Do you know if that would fit the spare tyre carrier?

My 215/75/16 (It's not an OEM size) fits in the spare wheel carrier fine so 205/75/16 certainly will.

Amazing! I’m so glad to hear this. When my current tyres wear out I’ll have the shop check if the 235/55/18 will fit fine with no rubbing on the arches (should be fine I’m not too lowered) and also swap out the spare.

I've just gone to 235/55/18 so much better than the staggered 20s. 60mm lowered, no rubbing.

Now I've got a flat tyre!
