OBD reader advice for T6

Hi all - new to VW (have been a Jag man for years - still have one), but swmbo bought a T6 camper last year. I have an Icarsoft OBD reader for the Jag, has anyone got any sensible suggestions for one for the T6?
Looked at the Carista but was a bit surprised at the need for a monthly subscription - if I was a mechanic I guess it would be essential, but for the odd occasion it wouldn't necessarily make sense, hence the query....

If you have an android phone, you don’t need need the subscription. You are supposed to, but you don’t need to.

Hi - how would that work then - is there an app that covers the Carista?
Apologies for asking what is probably a stupid question, but I am pretty old-school (spanners, oils, nuts'n'bolts etc)....

you can read codes without a subscription, just purchase a month if you needed to.
