No reverse lights

The other day the reverse camera decided to stop working completely. Over the past few months I was having to really wiggle the gear stick for the image to pop up on the head unit (atoto).

Anyway, I chased the wire and checked connections. Everything looks good. Then a neighbour commented saying I had no reverse lights while backing up... So issue is not with camera but actual reverse lights.

I swapped the reverse light switch, checked the connector plug and has 11.45 volts to it so seems ok, connector for the rear lights seem to be pulling same voltage also, and 10a fuse in engine bay is showing zero resistance.

I'm stumped as to what else to check or what it could be. I mean, I say I checked the rear light connector with a multimeter but I don't really know how to properly check or use one. I just kind of stuck the prongs in all the holes to get any reading 🤷

Any ideas? It's a 2004 T5 1.9. thanks!

Have you disassembled the rear light cluster and looked inside it?

You don’t mention it but have you checked the actual bulbs? I assume so.

Mine (a T5.1) developed a lot of corrosion around one of the reverse bulbs on the board inside the cluster. This stopped it working until I cleaned it all up.

Whether this would affect the camera….unlikely, but could even be two separate problems.

I did replace the bulbs anyway jus for the sake of ruling it out. Also the clusters on both sides look nice and clean inside

Do you know somebody who can use it? If so I suggest you get them to check and give you a few lessons at the same time, it will save some £ in the future when you have issues.

I don't unfortunately.

If you are having to wiggle the gearstick to get the reverse camera to show up, it seems the problem is in the gears.

I don't know much about it, but presumably there's some sensor that tells the van to light the reversing lights?

Is there any other indication on your van, that shows it is in reverse, apart from it going backwards?

No other indication. I believe it's the switch on the gearbox that tells the lights to come on, I swapped it out and the plug for it seems to pull nearly 12v so seems good

Ok, so I pulled the switch out of the gearbox and plugged it in, pressed the end down to complete the circuit and the reverse lights came on. So doesn't seem electrical. Must be to do with the gearbox/ selectors ...ect. What should I be looking at now do you think?

Are you sure that you have the correct reversing switch installed?

It did have this fault when I scanned it earlier. On further digging around, some people suggest a J519? Is this not the module that is under the drivers seat? Or is is something seperate?

Thanks again
