No respect for other people's property

I came out to find a huge scratch on Mrs Loz's mini this morning, looking back over the CCTV and looking at the video, this was an accident, but to just make off is an insult.

I am now going to find the parents and ask them to pay for the damage, had they knocked on my door and fessed up I would have let it go.

I'm a bit annoyed as to why I should use my insurance to pay for this....

That’s annoying.

Is it a funny reflection in the pic or is that a ding in the door at the end of the scratch?

I’d probably get it fixed directly rather than making a claim, but you’re still looking at a couple of hundred quid to fix, I reckon

I had the same recently on The Wife's Fiesta.....doesn't look deliberate but where she parks for work is prone to those disabled electric wheel chair things which proliferate my town.

By rights you can claim off the parents home insurance I believe.... tell them that if they're awkward.

Good point! A response to have up your sleeve if they get gobby!

......failing that, you have the option to go to the cops with the cctv and take it from there
Not really - it’s a civil matter. As @Loz said, it was an accident. It’s more about the disrespect and lack of manners. If the kids had fessed or, or told their parents who could speak with @Loz , he’d have just said “thanks for letting me know!”

I remember accidentally breaking a window and running away - I was 5! Anyway, my brother grassed me up at home. My father flipped his lid, gave me a bollocking for not ringing the doorbell and apologising etc. He dragged me off to do so and offered to pay/replace the glass (back in the era before sealed units!)

We've put a post on our local community farcebook page, so let's see who fesses up?

@JOG yes, it looks like a dent at the start of the scratch :(

Disagree mate, technically it's an RTC under legal definition as damage has been caused owing to the presence of a motor vehicle on a road. The cyclist is another road user. No details were left by either party so it reportable by the police.

the lack or respect for other peoples property nowadays is shocking. Most of you wouldn’t believe the attitude by young people in schools regarding this.

Out of interest what is the legal aspect of private cctv filming public areas?

Anyone can video/photograph anything and anyone in a public place. The only problem is if it's 'outraging public decency'......ie filming someone after an accident as they're taking their last breath.

It's a public area and the footage is only kept for enough time for crime prevention of my property.
The image posted was chosen not to show the faces of the boys.

It's the filming and how you use video of private areas that is the issue.
There can be a cause of nuisance if you say, use video as a way to persecute your neighbours.

I’d buy that argument

When out in public you can have no expectation of privacy. Dashcams record people going about their business every day.
The debate about the rights and wrongs of CCTV in public places was put to bed by the Jamie Bulger case.

I agree the more cctv the better, but I thought there is some issue with ring doorbells recording?

Totally agree. I used to work for a coach company that covered county council school contracts for secondary schools. The damage done to the coaches was unbelievable.

we found that the loss of fire extinguishers (and associated "return to base" standing order) significantly reduced when CCTV went in!

My daughter when she was young rammed her bike into someones car, knocked of the mirror and before the days of CCTV. She came home in panic and we went round to the house cos it's what you do. the guy was really good about it, it was an old car, the repairs where about DM50 (Germany) but he ws a handyman and sorted it himself.

I suggested to my daughter she got out her pocket money and buy him a bottle which she did. Him & I we are still friends to this day 30 years later.

The police aren't going to act. In Oct a guy hit my car in a car park & drove off. Witnessed by someone who'd had the same done to her last year and it cost her £1500: she was like a dog with a bone finding me in the leisure centre. She passed all his details to me, reg, car and his description. They refused to act on it. 2 escalations. Their view is. we're busy, no-one was injured and insurance should sort it out. They wouldn't even contact him to tell him we knew which car had done it. I still dont know his name or address but I do have his insurance details from the MID (£4.50 a search you just get his policy details no name). Solicitors issued proceeding against the guy yesterday from my legal insurance.

September last year a car hits my fence (£60) and some street furniture £1800 of damage to the street sign. Left his number plate behind with 5 digits & a local Kia garage logo, a load of blue paint. Police were not interested.

I have now formally complained to the Leicestershire PCC and they are looking into it.
