New rules for towing abroad, trailers over 750kg

£26 to register and another £21 to register a new keeper when you sell!

So, to take my caravan to France next summer I need to display the following.

  1. A number plate to match the tow vehicle registration
  2. A separate number plate with the trailer registration
  3. A UK sticker

I don’t know if you need to show both number plates. I assume (maybe incorrectly) that once the trailer has its own number, there’s no need to display the vehicle plate, they only show one plate abroad. The tow vehicle and trailer are considered completely independent entities. The trailer number plate would still come back to you (the trailer registered keeper) in the event of a speed camera or other incident.

Presumably, the £21 to register a new keeper would be payable by the new keeper only if he wanted to take the van abroad.

It’s unclear if there is a cost to de-register the trailer but says you should do so if you no longer plan to travel internationally

Yes, it’s on the website, apparently the trailer registration should be as far from the towing vehicle registration as possible, fixed to a vertical surface. No mention of lighting requirements either. But it’s white and the same size as a standard motorcycle plate.

Interested to see how this pans out.

Do all European caravans have different number plates to the tow vehicle? I don’t remember ever noticing this (not that I particularly would) but definitely never seen 2 plates apart from trailers on lorry’s in some countries

I towed a French friend’s boat a few years back. No need to put my plate on the trailer as the trailer had its own reg plate. My friend gave me the docs for the trailer and we were good to go.

So how does this work then? Do you need to swap the plates as you cross the channel? As the trailer should still have the vehicle plate in the uk right?
