@crackon I'm glad you've got it sorted, for what it's worth I think an engine specialist is always going to be a better bet than a dealer in the circumstances that you were in. You should have many more miles of motoring in the van now, and with a new dpf and egr you're well set up.
 
@DXX @boxelder Yes I'm glad it's over with and it was stressful, there wasn't any previous work on the fuel system in the lead up to it, but it had been doing a lot of short journeys. The fuel tank had been refilled by the time I took it to be initially diagnosed so any previous crap may have been diluted by the time it got to being tested. but I'm still not convinced it was the fuel, I just can't believe that, but the investigation by Dragon was the best independent advice I could realistically get in the circumstances and having been there, met them, seen their setup, talked it through loads with different people, I trust them more than I would almost anyone else, and would go there again if something similar happened.

Question is do I now sell it and if so do I get a new T6.1......or go for something different?
 
I'm glad you are finally sorted, I just wondering what triggered the HPFP failure, did the van ever run out of fuel?
Thinking about the age of the pump, 50k mile seems like only half-life, I wonder if it's worth changing that (depending on the cost...) whilst the cam belt/water pump is done....
 
Now you have a van where you know absolutely what’s been done to it, so I’d stick! However, I’m not sure that you are any wiser on what the root cause was so it’s in the “shit happens” category which @DXX advises against for mechanical matters!

@Loz - van never ran out of fuel - it did get very low once. HPFP, cambelt and waterpump have all now been replaced.
How much was the HPFP on the invoice? What I meant was, have it changed when the cambelt is done.
 
@Loz - can't remember exactly now but it was the price of the pump only not any extra labour for fitting it. I guess as the engine was in pieces everything was being put back together so it made sense to do the cambelt and waterpump at that point and the fuel pump whether old or new would have been refitted during the rebuild too.
 
What a horrible journey to have to go on, I felt sickly just reading it. Thanks for the update, glad you've sorted it. As for the decision to keep or sell, that's another thing I hope I never have to face.

Just to add to Crackons story of t6 misery. I have just had a very similar issue and what looked like the exact same issues. I have a 19 plate t6 150 dsg thats done 48k miles. almost exactly the same issues and same end result. Firstly it looked like an injector had gone but after further investigation it looks like the rubbish was getting into the cylinders which then caused a lock and then bent rods...it went from a few hundred pound repair to new engine really quickly. It was 2 months past warranty and VW didn't want to know so I have ended up paying for a new engine. VW did do a deal on a new engine though and I paid £3900 for a brand new VW engine with a two year warranty....all in all the new engine and all parts and labour has cost me £8.5k. I love my van as its camper conversion Leighton's van so looks great and ticks all my boxes and getting rid of it was never an option......its just annoying that VW know about the vaults with these engines and nothing has been done....hence the great price on a new engine
 
I am sat here now with a MAN TGE bi-turbo, somewhere in Bristol diagnosed injector #1 as the fault, I got asked to replace it which I did and it did improve for a short while however, still not cured.
I’ve just replaced the fuel pressure for a genuine one and it’s still misfiring at idle so I’ll be having a bit of a deeper dive into this one at some point in the near future. Wish me luck!
 
Below is a link to the JF Werkstatt YT page and a video confirming a bent #1 rod on a near identical engine to the one in this post. Thought it might shed some light on the actual fault.


I haven’t yet compression tested the engine and I’m on the fence whether I’m going to now after finding this. I wanted to get the injectors off for testing given the fuelling issues the CR’s do have and they have come back as good.
