New battery not charging off alternator

originally my van (t6) wouldn’t hold charge overnight and when I came the next morning battery was flat. Checked and was getting 14.78V once engine was running. Checked to see what A it was pulling while completely locked and was dropping too less than 20mA. Took it for a battery check and they said the battery needed replaced. I have replaced the battery like for like and when started back up don’t seem to be getting 14V back from the alternator now. Is this because the battery is completely charged or do I need to code the like for like battery into the ECU? Any help would be appreciated and sorry if this has been asked before.

Does your van have start/stop?

If so the alternator will not be charging all the time.

Do you have any other evidence (like the battery going flat) that charging might be an issue?

If you haven't updated the BCM info then you may find the charging to be more cautious and the start/stop not enable for a while but it should self learn the new battery health.

Yes it does have stop/start, and the old battery became flat but haven’t had the new one go flat yet I was just testing it after I fit it earlier.

Keep an eye on it but the self learning should settle down in 10-15 charge cycles.

If you can find someone with a tool that can update the battery values in the BCM if it's like for like all you need to do is change one of the numbers in the battery serial number field to make it forget the learned health and start treating it as new. I think all the popular tools Carista/OBDEleven/VCDS can do this.

Out of interest how old was your old battery?

I’ll maybe look at getting the tool myself, only owned the van about a month. The old battery had a sticker on saying November 2022 so not very old. Think it had been sat dead a while before I bought it.

Carista is quite cheap, you get a month free subscription with it. You only need the basic model for VW vehicles - the EVO model doesn't do anything extra for VW it just supports more brands.

If you need more long term you can subscribe as and when you need to or look at upgrading to something else - but it's likely to pay for itself in sorting out issues.

I use OBDEleven on the basic subscription plan

Much appreciated thank you, I’ll check Carista out. Definitely seems worth getting in the long run.

Post a few pics of the battery and connections....

We'll see what's connected.
