Mandatory Speed Limiters Coming

So we are still going to go along with EU legislation when we leave? That makes everything I’m getting thrown at me every time I switch the tv on a bit pointless:thumbsdown:

I wonder how many people will actually leave the speed limiter on as it says it will have an on/off switch

I've been saying for a long time now that this would happen at some point. Since the invention of the sat nav, the technology has effectively been in place to do it. It was just going to take a brave government to legislate it into place. Will be interesting to see how the UK reacts to having this imposed on the them by MEPs post brexit.

Can see some plus sides though.
1) May reduce emissions from what's left of internal combustion engines.
2) May also be used to reduce congestion by optimising traffic speed in accordance with the density of vehicles on the roads.
3) If the ability to disable a car is incorporated, vehicle theft and fail to stop scenarios in Police pursuits could be removed.

It's another step in the direction of fully autonomous vehicles.

It also says it will have be constantly logging speed. How long before insurance companies/police insist on downloading your logs following any incident?

This is one of the big problems with brexit, we’ll end up still signed up to all their laws anyway, but with restrictions put on our travel, commerce etc, so neither the leavers nor the remainers end up with what they want.

To some extent, this process is already in place @andys . Little black boxes in modern vehicles can be removed and sent back to the manufacturer for analysis, if the seriousness of the collision or offence warrants the expense of having it done.

They just want to stop all our fun.
What’s the point in buying a gas guzzling, supercharged Range Rover if you can’t go over 70. We’ll all be driving Fiat 500’s if that law comes in.

I think it would increase accidents with impatient driving and risky manoeuvres

Bang on - when you’ve got a slow motor, you don’t want to slow down for lane-changes, junctions or roundabouts. When you’ve got a decent bit of horsepower, you enjoy putting your foot down (after than little bit of braking).

This was my excuse when I smashed up my old work van, anyway

From someone who does a lot of miles on the UKs roads, I think this couldn't come in soon enough, but it won't, and there will be a way for the usual suspects to get around it.

Yes it's possible, but extremely rare, but this could make a routine occurrence, maybe even readable at the roadside.
We all knew this was coming one day, but the fact that the rules have already been approved and given an introduction date is not good news. I must admit at 55 I thought I'd be gone before things got to that stage.

If everyone is going the same speed there will be no need to overtake.
