Loud banging from engine.

Drove 1400klms on Wednesday, home from Coffs Harbour to Melbourne, 10 mins from home a sudden loud banging from engine stopped me dead.
I'm thinking a broken crank. What are your thoughts?
At first I thought harmonic balancer loose but all bolts seem tight. You can see belt pully wobbling when its running. I dont running it much.

Be interested to know what you find. I’d have assumed a broken crank wouldn’t have run at all though. Shell bearing or crank end bearing collapsed?

I have had a couple of experts confirm I have a broken crank.

But I have a second hand engine available but wanted to know how I can tell a TDI250 from a 2016 Runner, and a TDI340 from my long wheel base.

Appreciate any help as it goes off for swap tomorrow. I dont want less grunt.

I get a persistent noise from the passenger seat but it’s been ages since we banged loudly!

Surprisingly it would be uncommon for it not to run. The rough edges of the fracture combined with the general lack of end float will usually keep things rotating together. In fact it would take something like a precise saw cut to allow the two halves to rotate independently.
