Looking after a bike rack?

So I have a vw 4 bike rack. Do most people leave them on and if so do you do anything to look after it, bit of grease or oil on the nuts and bolts. Will UV eventually destroy the plastic bits?

I've just bought a used 4 Yr old one and, bar the usual marks and scratches, it appears in good fettle. As its just me and SWMBO, I've taken the 2nd and 4th bike holders off. Fully intend to leave it in situ permanently

I leave mine on. Along with the roof box

I leave mine on! Did the same on my T5.1 - was on for years. The straps can degrade in UV but that’s about it
