long crank CAAB

Hi,

wonder if anybody can help - i have an intermittent long crank, sometimes it does it first thing in the morning, other times it does it after a short journey.

i am about to replace the flywheel and clutch just for preventative maintenance, and the starter is sticking every now and again so i am swapping that too.

however, i had it on VCDS whilst it was long cranking today and injector 3 shot up to 3mg/s +

was just wondering if this could be the reason for my long crank? i have a copy of VCDS so would be grateful if anybody could help

just to add it is a 2012 CAAB

Any saved recordings?

Please post the following

1) Full VCDS Auto-Scan
2) Engine blockmap - Ignition ON/engine OFF
3) Engine blockmap - Engine running at idle

How-to create a blockmap file:

[VCDS]
[Applications]
[Controller Channel Map]
- Single Controller Address = 01
- Login or security access code: Leave blank
- Function: Measuring values
- Output: CSV file
[Go]

The result (TXT and CSV) files are saved into directory C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Logs
Please attach the files here.

vcds will not save it or attempt to anything when i attempt the block map? Is there something im missing following your instructions?

just read its because its a clone cable online. Serves me right for being a tight t****. I will have to order a genuine and get back to you. As it stands is there anything i can do to check the injectors with what i have currently?

Well, the clone cables do not perform well recording data (slow taking samples so difficult to catch fast glitches.
Anyways, a recording of the following would be a starting point - both a good start for a reference and long crank for comparison. Just few to get started - basically just to verify fuel pressure behaviour.

IDE00021 Engine RPM
IDE00347 Air mass: actual value:
IDE00352 Main injection: duration of activation
IDE00589 Fuel pressure
IDE04263 Sensor for particle filter differential press: raw value
IDE04670 Crankshaft signal evaluation: status

I do intend to get the genuine cable, the van has just emptied my wallet recently - clutch and starter motor plus cambelt.

Is there a way to record this or should i do a video?

Yes, recordings of data would be helpful.

Ignition ON

VCDS > Select > 01-Engine > Adv. Meas. Values
Tick the mentioned data items
IDE00021 Engine RPM
IDE00347 Air mass: actual value:
IDE00352 Main injection: duration of activation
IDE00589 Fuel pressure
IDE04263 Sensor for particle filter differential press: raw value
IDE04670 Crankshaft signal evaluation: status

Log > filename > Start (the logging - IMPORTANT!!!)
Crank/start the engine
Stop (the logging), etc.

The result (TXT and CSV) files are saved into directory C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Logs
Please attach the files here.

Thanks. Were these long cranks?
The 1st took quite long to reach proper idling RPM, but as your VCDS takes measurements only every 1.2 seconds it's hard to say when things exactly happened. A second is a long time for engine to start. Genuine cable is about 10x faster.

Anyways, there was adequate fuel pressure for ECU to fire the injectors. The dashed line of injection duration is just to indicate when ECU fires injectors.

Yes the first one (named cold start 1) gave me a long crank, the second one it fired right up. So is this long crank not looking like the injectors? Or would i need a new cable to pin point it

I don't think we can conclude anything yet.
When it eventually fires, does it fire on all cylinders right away?

Have you tried to give "double-glow" to see if makes any difference - turn ignition ON, wait till glow light goes OFF, turn ignition OFF, immediately turn ignition back ON and start the engine?

Possibly would be helpful.

However, we could try by reducing recorded data to see if it shows anything re fuel pressure build-up.
Please make a recording by ticking only the following two
IDE00021 Engine RPM
IDE00589 Fuel pressure

If its the first start of the day it doesnt fire on all cylinders it runs rather rough. I have tried the double glow method and even done it multiple more times but it has no difference.

Understood on the additional recording, would you like one with a long crank and one without?
