Leisure Battery Install - Sealed For Life - Maybe Not!!

Evening all!

In process of fitting Leisure batteries, one under seat seat in front. Got all my bits from @travelvolts (Great chap!! Can’t reccomend him highly enough!)

However I was hoping to use my two lesuire batteries from my previous van as batteries are expensive as we all know so no need to buy just for the fun of it.

However just put mine in, yes they will need to be layed on their side. And something started to drip out of a hole. I can only presume it’s a breather hole and even though it’s a SFL (Sealed For Life) Battery it cant actually be installed any other way except upwards. Luckily I spotted it!

Any thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I might be wrong but I thought is is only AGM batteries that you can lay on the side. Sealed batteries are still wet batteries, looks like it’s leaked from the breather hole. I think sealed means you don’t have to top them up with electrolyte like you had to do years ago.

What @Deaky said . . . . Looks like they need to be kept upright!

Sealed For Life Batteries
(SFL)

The maintenance free product termed "sealed for life" uses Flooded Lead Acid technology, therefore it has to be vented, its box cannot be totally sealed. Extra chemicals are added to stop water useage within the battery, therefore eliminating the need to top up or maintain.

Product Details

• Range has varying sizes from 85Ah to 120Ah
• Can be used in all Leisure environments
• Our GP range is for general purpose use
• Our DP range is for starting and domestic use
• Magic eye indicator gives an indication of the state of charge
(not fitted on all models)
• Suitable for deep discharge and charge cycles

Acid spills can lead to corrosion

Well that idea is out the window then. Ha!

Got another lesuire Battery and that fits better standing up. But not got customise the bolt down clamps as they are too long! Also same battery out of stock! Typical ha.

DC to DC Charger going in, plus 240 mains hookup (unsure if will use it but did it whilst floor was up etc) Then consumer unit going in with auto switch for inverter and mains hookup.

Then usual plugs, switches, lights etc.

No fancy sound system, but might upgrade the standard speakers.

Time will tell with what else. Can’t reveal all right now. Ha!

Battery under each seat is the plan. If I can ever work out best way to do it.

Hi All, which batteries have you chosen that fit well under the seats? And do you have any pictures please :D

Hi guys. Starting leisure battery install. However I need to get wired from engine bay to rear. How the heck do I see where to drill?
Any help would be epic.

Before you do, have to looked to see if there is a spare feed already under the passenger seat? There have been vans with the charge cable already in place but just taped off.

Thanks for reply. I can’t see a spare feed.
So I’ll have to find a way in

There are a couple of unused grommets high up on the left on the bulkhead in the passenger footwell.

Ensure the terminals are covered over prior to reinstalling the seat.. you don't want to catch a terminal.

Thanks guys. I went through Rayne Automotive. I can’t get my battery to fit under the seat. :( it will have to go in the back somewhere.

A huge thanks for all your help today guys. PDF from travel volts changed my life, could also be the whiskey I had to calm my rage.
None the less a great day in the van and I feel a little closer to where it needs to be for the year ahead. Once done I will post some pics.
I’m in the bonnet and the main inlet socket attached, it’s too dark to do other bits now.
Cheers people.

Hi all I need a replacement leisure battery for my T5 ,it currently has a 110ah wet cell that has now failed.
Can anyone recommend a good replacement?have looked on the travel volts site but am unsure what to get
This is currently charged with a split charger and 230v hook up and battery charging system

I also want to do the same with my T6 this would be a dc to dc charge system.

So could any one recommend for both
Thanks
John
