Its At This Moment.....

4Motion is a great way of getting into trouble faster though if your tyres aren't going to bite in during cornering or braking.

Very true. The centripetal force thats keeping you out of the ditch throws in the towel at the same point, regardless of 2 or 4wd!

Four wheel drive doesn't equal invincibility, as witnessed by the number of Q7s, Discos and X5s that need pulling out of ditches by a tractor every year round our way. More weight = more momentum, tyres are key more often than not.

Spot on there.
The problem is some 4x4 owners presume they are 'invincible' in all conditions, when it reality many of them are running 19, 20 and even 21" wheels that might look cool, but often clad in general use summer tyres.
I've just put full on winters on my wife's Mini, and the difference in the cold greasy mornings is night and day, and we are not even into winter yet!
I also spend a lot of time and money at my local tyre shop, and hear the same phrase all the time '"just fit what ever is the cheapest" regardless of season, conditions, load ratings or speed ratings.
People put very little thought into the part of the vehicle that actually keeps you in contact with the road surface, and I have no sympathy for those that end up falling off the road because of ignorance.

And that pretty much sums up the point.
Goodyear Eagle F1 is a tyre I've used several times, and it's one of the best sticky tyres I know in the summer, but they are appalling at this time of year, and I know that because they are on my van as we speak, until Thursday, when the winters arrive and get fitted.
With Snow and Ice becoming a more common theme of British winters, proper tyres should become law, just like they are in other parts of the world.

so do you keep 2 sets of tyres and swap them each season?
I had 3 sets of wheels for our Touareg, Full summers (Eagle F1s) Full winters (Vredesteins) and a set of ATs for overland trips. It is a hassle storing them but only takes an hour to swap them.

As the Cali is not being used as a daily driver I just have the ATs on all the time now and I am going to just swap the tyres on the mini to winters if it goes really cold and icy down in the SW this winter.

I stuck a set on my wife's Mini a few weeks ago. This is the first time she's had full winters on, and she absolutely loves them for confidence in this weather.

Just put a full set on mine, and like her car, they seem far more comfortable than my summers. I'm assuming the tyre compounds are a lot softer, but it's instantly noticeable.

Yes I agree, we swapped them on the Smart (I still have the Smart winter wheels if anyone wants a set) and yes, the feel and confidence is instantly noticeable, but I will just do the tyre swap rather than buy more wheels this time...

Like you, I was always an advocate of separate wheels, but I have such a good relationship with my tyre shop, that they don't charge me to do the tyre swap, so i'm just keeping the tyres separate and swapping them when needed.

As for garage space and what they take up, i'm copying the tyre shop and rigging up a scaffold pole high up on my garage wall, where the tyres will store out the way.

That's excessive :)
okay for bare tyres but complete wheels should be stacked on their sides.
