Items falling out of Tailgate when opened

I am new to owning a t6.1 and want to understand what people’s solutions are to items moving in the back especially moving to the tailgate and then the item falling out of the tailgate as you open it.

Are lips or nets available to prevent things moving beyond a certain point?

…..Seriously though, I think there might be a market for something a bit more substantial than a cargo net to cure this problem.

I have a custom-built, hex ply bulkhead in the back of my camper - it's floor to roof and is positioned behind the R&R bed in a LWB set-up. It's built with lipped shelving and has tie-down points with web strapping. If fully loaded, it doesn't stop the odd Croc or walking boot falling out when you open the tailgate, but it does stop all the bulky and heavy items from shifting due to the inertial forces of acceleration, deceleration and cornering.

Appreciate that having such a bulkhead isn't to everyone's taste, but it works well for us and means we can store a surprising amount of stuff in a boot that, lengthways, is relatively shallow.

Depends what kind of van you have and what you're carrying in the back?

Here's my packing solutions for a Caravelle with a rear kitchen pod:

Both the above look great , but there not for me.

Some kind of roller that lifts up from the floor and hooks in somehow would suit me. Like the original luggage cover.

Had forgotten for a brief moment what your van looked like @Bav. Are you loving it?

Oh yes - more and more so as we become familiar and practised with it. I especially enjoy using it for forum events and meeting up with my forum buddies. :inlove:

Take less “stuff”. We are minimalist campers and have spare room in the van, yet we manage to do 2 month summer trips & 6 week winter skiing trips. Even then, we often come home with clothes that we haven’t worn & food & drink that we haven’t consumed. When we first got the van, we did what most folk do & crammed every nook & cranny with “stuff” that we might need, you end up playing chess by having to move stuff around to get to more stuff. We realised that we were doing it wrong. Now we have boiled our kit down to trusted essentials, de-cluttered the van & it’s a much easier & enjoyable experience.

I’d not worry about losing a croc or two
Do you leave the bulkhead in when you’re parked up?

It's not so much "doing it wrong" as simply being inexperienced - the more experienced at 'vanning you become, the lower the temptation is to pack things "just in case". I guess it's analogous to taking Heinz ketchup on holiday to Spain back in the 70s - until you'd been, you didn't know whether it was available locally or whether you'd even need any!!

Yes - no choice, it's a permanent installation. :)

Agree about the Crocs - losing them could be a distinct advantage!!
